Newcastle: Howe eyeing move for Calhanoglu

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in a move for Inter Milan star, Hakan Calhanoglu, as manager Eddie Howe seeks to recruit a new creative midfielder.

What’s the latest on Calhanoglu to Newcastle?

According to InterLive.it, the Magpies – as well as Premier League rivals Leeds United – have been named as possible suitors for the Turkey international this summer, with the 29-year-old facing something of an uncertain future at San Siro with just 15 months left to run on his current deal.

The report suggests that the 74-cap playmaker – who joined the Nerazzurri on a free transfer from rivals AC Milan back in 2021 – could potentially be the subject of a bid from Leeds for a fee of around €30m (£26m).

The player’s agent, Gordon Stipic, has only recently revealed that his client is in “no rush” to agree to a contract extension, potentially opening the door for the Tynesiders to pounce ahead of next season.

Could Calhanoglu be Newcastle’s Maddison alternative?

A new midfield asset has clearly been on the agenda for the St James’ Park outfit of late, having been heavily linked with a move for Leicester City sensation James Maddison in the January transfer window, after previously lodging a £50m bid for the 26-year-old over the summer.

Further reports have indicated that the Englishman will again be a top target for Howe and co come the end of the season, although champions Manchester City are also now in the mix for the player – whose own deal is set to expire in 2024.

That rival interest from the Etihad outfit may prove a spanner in the works for Howe’s plan of prising the Coventry-born gem from the King Power Stadium, hence the need to look for an alternative in the form of Calhanoglu.

The latter man has enjoyed a fruitful campaign thus far with three goals and six assists in 33 games in all competitions for the Serie A side, with that a respectable record despite not quite matching the feats of Maddison – who has 14 goals involvements in just 20 games across all fronts this season.

Clearly a player who can make an impact in the final third, Calhanoglu also mirrors the Leicester man with his ability to drive his side forward from deep, with that evidenced by the fact that he ranks in the top 20% among midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues for progressive carries, while Maddison ranks in the top 18% in that regard.

Equally, while the latter man has been lauded by Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate as an asset who can provide “world-class” delivery, the Inter ace is also a real threat from dead-ball situations, having been noted as something of a ‘free-kick specialist’ – as per The Guardian.

The German-born ace – who has 30 goal involvements to his name in just 79 games for his current side – previously laid on 80 goals and assists in 172 games for his former employers, as well as 28 goals and 29 assists in just 115 games during his time at Leverkusen.

Undoubtedly a figure who can unpick a defence or produce a moment of magic when required, the 5 foot 10 dynamo could emerge as something of a talisman for Howe and co, having previously been described by former boss Stefano Pioli as an “exceptional guy, [who] has the qualities to become the protagonist.”

Those traits should ensure that Calhanoglu would certainly be an astute signing for Newcastle if a deal can be struck this summer, particularly should the long-running pursuit of Maddison fail to bare fruit.

Leeds: Gracia could unearth his next Richarlison in Rutter

While Jesse Marsch’s sacking from Leeds United a matter of weeks ago was unsurprising, the decision that was taken in order to replace him was somewhat of a shock.

The Whites cast their net out in search of a swift appointment but were knocked back several times, first by the disciple of Marcelo Bielsa – Carlos Corberan – who signed a new deal at West Bromwich Albion and then by Andoni Iraola who was blocked by his club, Rayo Vallecano.

As a result, Victor Orta and co were left with limited options, ultimately looking towards his fellow countryman in Javi Gracia.

A strange appointment it indeed looks, and when considering he reportedly doesn’t even have a work permit, the hire becomes even more perplexing.

The former Watford boss at least arrives with experience in English football and indeed the Premier League, but it will be an uphill battle to keep the Yorkshire side in the division.

Fortunately, he does have a number of talented young players to call upon, one of which is Giorginio Rutter.

What impact could Rutter have under Gracia?

The year of 2023 has been a troubling one not just for Leeds, who have not won a game since the resumption of the league following the World Cup, but also for new signing Rutter.

Signed from Hoffenheim in the winter, the 20-year-old looks a raw but exciting talent. That said, he is yet to find the net in his five Premier League games and 109 minutes of action.

Those are limited involvements indeed but under Gracia, he could well thrive.

After all, this is a manager who once coached a certain Richarlison to prominence all those years ago at Vicarage Road with the Brazilian – now a £60m footballer at Spurs – playing under Gracia’s tutelage for the Hornets.

Although he failed to score for the Spaniard, he is undoubtedly one of the most notable players the new Leeds boss has worked with.

The Brazil international is a master of the dark arts when it comes to his off-the-ball work, making himself a nuisance for opposition defenders.

But he is indeed a competent footballer too, using his pace and trickery to work openings for both himself and his teammates. It is those qualities that have seen him ultimately go on to score 48 times in the Premier League.

Capable of operating as a centre-forward or out on the flanks, there are clear parallels with Rutter who plays in similar areas of the pitch.

At Leeds, the Frenchman has exclusively played as a striker but with Patrick Bamford now back in the fold, could play out wide. That said, with Gracia previously favouring a 4-4-2, perhaps the duo could operate together in the same side.

But what makes this comparison to Richarlison all the more obvious is their skill set, with scout Jacek Kulig once hailing the “clinical finisher” for his “blistering pace.”

Described as ‘part centre-forward, part jet-heeled winger’ by the Bundesliga website, the 20-year-old was among the 50 quickest players in Germany’s top tier with a top speed of 21.46 mph, just 2 mph quicker than that of the current Spurs attacker.

Rutter’s ‘direct running and mesmerising dribbling’ as per Bundesliga.com only add further comparisons, with such a player only set to get better as the years go on.

Leeds, and Gracia, however, will just have to hope that progression happens in the next few weeks. He will be key to any chance the Elland Road outfit has of staying up.

Tottenham set sights on Ivan Toney transfer

Tottenham Hotspur have set their sights on a move for Brentford striker Ivan Toney, according to Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Spurs eyeing Toney

It was reported earlier this season that Tottenham sporting director Fabio Paratici was eyeing a swoop for the 26-year-old ahead of a potential move in the January transfer window, but Spurs instead chose to strengthen other areas of the squad.

Right-back Pedro Porro was brought in on a £5m loan deal with a £39m obligation to buy, while winger Arnaut Danjuma arrived on loan, with Antonio Conte choosing to wait until the summer before signing an out-and-out striker.

The Latest: Spurs keeping close tabs on Toney

As per Football Insider, Tottenham are keeping close tabs on Toney, who is currently holding talks with Brentford about a new contract.

The implication is that if these discussions do not go to plan, Spurs could swoop in for the 26-year-old, considering Richarlison and Heung-min Son are said to be struggling for form, with the duo managing only 10 goals in 48 appearances combined this season.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-4/” title=”Tottenham latest news” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/cropped-tottenham-fans.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Get it done?

Given that Tottenham have Harry Kane at their disposal, who recently broke Jimmy Greaves’ record as the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, it may be difficult to attract Toney, as he knows that he will almost certainly be playing second fiddle to the England captain in N17.

That said, if they are able to tempt the ‘sensational’ 26-year-old (as dubbed by presenter Ste Howson) into a move to north London, he would be a fantastic signing. That much is indicated by his superb scoring record in the Premier League this season, netting 13 times in 19 outings and also weighing in with three assists.

His prolific goal return for Brentford – 61 goals in 110 appearances – begs the question as to just how prolific he could be in a team of Tottenham’s calibre, and Paratici should continue to monitor the progress of contract talks at the Gtech Community Stadium over the coming weeks.

Leeds eyeing Michael Keane

Leeds United are one of the teams keen on signing Michael Keane this month…

What’s the word?

That’s according to talkSPORT, who have listed the Yorkshire outfit alongside fellow Premier League rivals West Ham United and Southampton as likely suitors for the out-of-favour Everton defender.

However, it’s thought that the Toffees would be reluctant to let him leave for a direct competitor, whilst their managerial situation throws further doubt on the matter as the 30-year-old was frozen out by sacked boss Frank Lampard.

It also remains to be seen how much Keane would command as he’s currently valued at just €6m (£5m) by CIES Football Observatory, some five-and-a-half years after his £30m switch from Burnley.

Llorente upgrade

The Whites picked up only their third clean sheet since late September with a 0-0 draw to Brentford last weekend, ending a run of four successive matches of conceding two or more goals, in which 50% of those outings were against lower-league opposition. Meanwhile, only four other teams have conceded more than Leeds (33) so far this term.

It’s fair to suggest that one of Jesse Marsch’s biggest problems has been in defence and it’s hardly a surprise given the constant chopping and changing to his backline, though that has partly been down to never-ending injuries.

Would Keane be an upgrade, though? Well, there’s a case to be made over him being better than Diego Llorente – the American’s lowest-rated defender in 2022/23. In fact, of all players to have made eight or more appearances, the Spanish titan has been the worst, per WhoScored.

His inconsistent and calamitous nature was recently put back in the spotlight against Cardiff City, arguably being at fault for both of their goals in a pretty disastrous showing.

Whilst the Englishman hasn’t been playing much for Everton this term, they are joint-bottom in his absence, having played 32 of 36 matches last season, which included a stunning 3-0 victory over the Whites, where he found himself on the scoresheet and kept a clean sheet against the likes of Raphinha and Rodrigo.

Sofascore graded him to be the best player on the pitch with an 8.0 rating after he won 75% of his duels and made three interceptions, a feat that eclipsed the aforementioned Leeds dud, too.

In each of his last seven seasons in the Premier League, prior to his one, Keane has never recorded a worse average WhoScored rating than what Llorente is currently on, proving to be a mark of consistency over the years and perhaps makes Lampard’s decision to omit him all that stranger.

Despite his lack of game time, the 6 foot 3 titan – who was dubbed a “colossus” by The Athletic’s Greg O’Keeffe – still remains inside the top 7% of all central defenders across Europe’s top five divisions for aerial duels won (3.18) per 90, some way clear of Llorente again as he sits on the cusp of the top 48% (2.04).

As such, it’s evident that Leeds could actually land themselves a defensive upgrade in the form of Keane, although director of football Victor Orta is fast running out of time to get this one over the line.

AND in other news, Forget Wober: Orta could complete best Leeds business yet by signing £26m “top target”…

LUFC linked to Rutter, Gyokeres and Driussi

Journalist Beren Cross has revealed that Leeds United are working on bringing in a new striker with Georginio Rutter, Viktor Gyokeres and Sebastian Driussi all targeted.

What’s the word?

With the January transfer market now open, the Whites wasted little time in adding defender Max Wober from Red Bull Salzburg to their ranks as he was announced just three days into the window.

With that area of the field now strengthened, it looks as though the club are going to try and bring in some quality further up the field to help out with the attack.

For instance, recent reports have claimed that Hoffenheim forward Georginio Rutter is a key target. However, it seems as though other options, such as Gyokeres and Driussi are also being considered.

Indeed, in an article for LeedsLive, Cross explained: “A striker is being worked on. Leeds like Rutter, Gyokeres and Sebastian Driussi, who was linked with the Whites last November too.”

Exciting options

Gyokeres has been linked in recent weeks to a number of different Premier League clubs – including Brentford, Crystal Palace, and Everton – so Leeds might find it hard to win the race for the 24-year-old Coventry City striker.

Driussi is an interesting alternative target. As Cross mentions, Jesse Marsch’s side were touted as a possible destination for the player last year. Seeing as he netted 25 goals in all competitions for MLS side Austin FC in 2021/22 it’s not hard to see why he might have caught the eye of the Whites’ American manager either.

Rutter, though, seems to be the man closest to a move. As per reliable transfer source Fabrizio Romano, negotiations are already ‘very advanced’ with personal terms now sorted. The French striker is still only 20 years old but has already played 64 times for Hoffenheim, scoring 11 goals and setting up eight more.

With these three names being touted, it will certainly be interesting to see who Leeds opt to push the boat out for and if they can get anything over the line this month.

Unai Emery slammed after Villa FA Cup exit

BBC pundit Chris Sutton has questioned Aston Villa manager Unai Emery for his team selection following the club’s shock recent defeat.

What’s the latest?

Over the past weekend, in the third round of the FA Cup, the Villans were dumped out of the tournament losing 2-1 at home to League Two side Stevenage.

Indeed, things looked to be going to plan when Morgan Sanson gave Villa a first-half lead. However, Leander Dendoncker was then shown a straight red card late on as Jamie Reid equalised from the resulting penalty before Dean Campbell scored a 90th-minute winner.

While speaking about the result on BBC Radio Show 606, Sutton questioned Emery for his team lineup and said it was a ‘damaging’ loss for the new manager.

He explained: “Were you happy about the change of personnel? I mean, Villa weren’t the only team to do it but, I don’t know, it always disappoints me, that.

“I mean, Villa haven’t been flying this season, of course. Unai Emery [now] in the door. But this is a damaging defeat for him, isn’t it?”

Big mistake?

Emery has done fairly well since taking over at Aston Villa shortly before the break for the winter World Cup. Indeed, he has managed the club for five Premier League games, winning three, drawing one and losing one.

However, tasting defeat in the FA Cup to League Two opposition certainly will not help win over any supporters who were on the fence about his appointment.

In his starting team, the Spaniard opted to start backup players such as Robin Olson, Calum Chambers, Jan Bednarek and Morgan Sanson. While the likes of Emi Martinez, Tyrone Mings, and Ollie Watkins were all benched.

Clearly, he underestimated Stevenage and his plan to rotate the team backfired. Villa last won the FA Cup in 1957 and they’ll have to wait another year now before they can challenge for the title again.

West Ham could soar with Azzedine Ounahi

West Ham United could be set to move for one of the World Cup’s breakout stars…

What’s the latest?

That’s according to The Mail, who claimed that the performances of Azzedine Ounahi in Qatar have led to his reported £40m price tag.

His club Angers remain unwilling to part with him for any less than that, with interest from the Hammers, along with Premier League rivals Leicester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers, sure to drum up a substantial fee.

However, GSB hold reservations given the supposed gulf in quality between his performances for club and country.

The next step

Having finished in the European spots for the last two seasons, it is clear that David Moyes is looking for ways to continue bridging the gap between his team and the traditional ‘top six’.

The manager’s vast summer overhaul saw an expenditure of £158m, yet their current position of 16th will surely worry him. In order to turn the tide, he needs quality and depth in all areas, and central midfield has been lacking.

Declan Rice has been West Ham’s star man for many years now, shouldering the majority of the defensive burden in the engine room. However, his recent comments suggest that his ambitions might have outgrown the London Stadium.

Moyes will duly need to make a statement of intent in January, and spending £40m to give the captain this partner could be integral in taking that next step.

Such is Ounahi’s pedigree that Ray Parlour touted him for a move to Arsenal as he told talkSPORT (via Daily Mail): “Ounahi, the No.8, he is different class. Would I take him at Arsenal? Definitely!”

His displays alongside Sofyan Amrabat for Morocco have captured the imagination, with the perfect blend of defensive steel and attacking impetus once the ball has been reclaimed.

The 22-year-old has recorded a 6.97 average rating across the tournament, recording 0.9 shots, 0.9 key passes and 1.3 tackles per game (via Sofascore). Even Jose Mourinho felt implored to praise the midfielder, labelling him “absolutely incredible”.

Although Ounahi’s average rating may be lower for his club, he arguably offers slightly more as his shots per game average increases to 1.6 and his key passes average is 1.2 per match.

For West Ham to place this beside their sensational captain who can also create and defend could be the catalyst for a sustained push for the Champions League places.

Leeds: Orta could seal bargain Kent swoop

Leeds United could finally bring long-term transfer target Ryan Kent to Elland Road at the end of the current campaign.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Leeds Live, who claim that, having been heavily linked with a move for the Glasgow Rangers winger ever since the Whites’ return to the Premier League back in 2020, Victor Orta could finally land the 26-year-old next summer – when the attacker’s current contract at Ibrox is set to expire.

The report goes on to suggest that, while the Scottish Premiership side are likely to do all they can to tie the former England U20 international down to a new contract between now and the end of the season, a move to the top flight of English football on a free transfer could fit perfectly with the forward’s plans heading into his prime years.

Absolute steal

Considering just how impressive Kent has been for Rangers in recent seasons, coupled with the fact that Leeds have been linked with a £20m move for the winger for the past two years, should Orta manage to seal the signing of the 26-year-old on a free next summer, it would undoubtedly represent an absolute steal for the Premier League side.

Indeed, the £15m-rated talent has been a continuous source of goals and creativity for Gers over the past four and a half years, hitting the back of the net on 31 separate occasions and providing his teammates with a further 53 assists over his 196 appearances for the club – averaging a direct goal involvement every 189 minutes of football played for the Light Blues.

The £52k-per-week winger particularly impressed over his 37 Premiership outings in Rangers’ title-winning campaign back in 2020/21, scoring ten goals, registering nine assists and creating nine big chances for his side, in addition to taking an average of 2.3 shots – 0.9 of which were on target – making 1.8 key passes and completing 1.9 dribbles per game.

These returns saw the player who Andrew Dickson dubbed “completely unplayable” and “on a different level altogether” average a simply sensational Sofascore match rating of 7.23, not only ranking him as Steven Gerrard’s fourth-best performer in the league but also as the seventh-best player in the top flight of Scottish football as a whole that season.

Furthermore, over the forward’s 1465 Champions League minutes in the current campaign, despite his side’s disastrous showing in football’s most prestigious club competition, FBref still rank Kent in the top 8% of attacking midfielders and wingers in Europe’s big five leagues for dribbles competed per 90 – highlighting just how effective the 26-year-old is with the ball at his feet.

As such, it is clear to see exactly why Kent has been a long-term target of Orta and Leeds, as the winger would undoubtedly make an exceptional addition to Jesse Marsch’s current wide attacking options at Elland Road – especially on a free transfer.

Jackson could be Aston Villa’s Neymar

Unai Emery got his Aston Villa career off to a blinding start as he beat Manchester United 3-1 in his first Premier League match in charge last Sunday.

The club are now 14th in the table but could still head into the World Cup break level on points with the drop zone if results do not go their way next weekend.

Villa have not enjoyed an impressive start to the campaign, losing seven of their 14 matches, and Emery could use the upcoming January transfer window to bolster his squad.

One player Villa are reportedly looking at ahead of the market opening is Villarreal winger Nicolas Jackson, who worked with the Spanish coach earlier this season and last term.

Fellow Premier League sides Newcastle and Everton are also said to be keen on the gem but his pre-existing relationship with Emery could give the Villans the advantage in this particular race.

The Spanish head coach could unearth his next version of Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar at Villa Park by securing a deal to sign Jackson in January.

Reporter Ashley Preece recently described him as a player with “bags of potential” and talent scout Jacek Kulig claimed that the winger is known as “Neymar” in his home country of Senegal.

In an article about Jackson for Kulig’s website, Harold Monteiro Macedo wrote: “He is an attacking midfielder who can also play one both right and left wing and as a striker. He is very good on the ball, good at dribbling and passing. He likes to carry the ball to create danger and create chances for his teammates.”

This suggests that the attacker, who has a £27m release clause, is similar to the Brazilian sensation in the sense that he can play in a multitude of roles across the frontline and is adept at moving past players with the ball at his feet, much like the PSG star – who has completed 4.3 dribbles per game across his career.

The Spanish tactician will already know all about the 30-year-old with Neymar featuring 30 times under Emery. During their spell together in Paris, the Brazil international scored a remarkable 28 goals and also registered 18 assists. It is far-fetched to suggest Villa’s latest transfer target could reach the same heights but it shows why the comparison is such an exciting one.

Jackson has shown signs of having the end product to match his phenomenal build-up play, scoring two goals and providing two assists, whilst creating four ‘big chances’ in eight La Liga starts for Villarreal this season. That comes after producing five goals and seven assists in 25 appearances in the Spanish third tier for the B team last term.

At the age of 21, the forward has plenty of time left on his hands to develop and improve his final ball and this means that he could grow into a more consistent and impactful winger with his contributions at the top end of the pitch.

Therefore, if the wing wizard can fulfil his undoubted potential, Emery could well be staring at his new version of Neymar. Exciting times.

Wilson in England squad ‘huge’ for NUFC

Pundit Tam McManus claims that Callum Wilson being picked in the England squad for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar would be ‘huge’ for Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: In 55-man list

As per The Athletic, Wilson is on Gareth Southgate’s 55-man longlist for the upcoming tournament, which has to be cut down to 26 before it starts.

His last appearance for the Three Lions came in 2019, but his exceptional form this season, which has seen him score six goals and make two assists in nine games in the Premier League (Transfermarkt), means that he is in the conversation for a place on the plane.

The Latest: ‘Huge deal’

Speaking to Football Insider, McManus has claimed that it would be ‘massive’ for Wilson if he made the squad, and the 41-year-old added that it would also be a ‘huge deal’ for the Magpies:

“He should absolutely go to Qatar.

“He is in fantastic form, and he must have convinced Southgate with that performance against Villa. As a striker, what more can you do to convince a manager?

“I think Newcastle will want him to go. There is the risk he gets an injury and misses some of the second half of the season but Newcastle have other options. Isak is still coming back.

“The club will be supporting Callum, I’m sure of that. Just think what it would do for his confidence if he went to the World Cup and scored.

“It would be massive. If he goes, it’s not the end of the world for Newcastle. It would be a huge deal for the club on and off the pitch.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-7/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Deserved

Wilson deserves a place in the squad given his form so far this campaign and the fact that he has managed to keep himself largely constant injury problems throughout his career at St. James’ Park.

Only Harry Kane and Ivan Toney have scored more goals than him in the league in terms of English forwards, and only Kane is averaging more goals per 90 minutes.

His team-mates Nick Pope and Kieran Trippier will also be hoping to be on the plane alongside Wilson, which would be big for Eddie Howe’s side to have three representatives at the tournament.

Nonetheless, with Kane a certainty to go as England captain, there is a space left for his depute, and Wilson looks to be one of the strongest candidates to take that spot at the moment.
