Quinton de Kock leads South Africa's rout of Australia

His second century in as many games lifted South Africa to 311, and Australia barely got going in the chase

Moody: Australia look like a side put together in the last minute

If South Africa really do want to move through this 2023 World Cup under the radar, they must do better than this. Because in wiping the floor with Australia in Lucknow, winning by a mammoth 134 runs for their second victory in as many games, they have put out one hell of a statement that is impossible to ignore. As ever, Quinton de Kock made the most noise, crashing 109 up top as South Africa put up 311 for 7 having been asked to bat first. Australia’s decision at the toss, and the moves to reinforce their batting with Josh Inglis and Marcus Stoinis drafted in for Alex Carey and Cameron Green, came to nothing. A lack of impetus with the ball and errors in the field spilled into their chase – dead and buried as early as the 18th over at 70 for 6. Two straight defeats mean they can afford little room for error in the remaining seven games of the league stage.Related

Smith, Stoinis calls put spotlight on TV umpire in Australia-South Africa World Cup game

It’s not news that this tournament will be de Kock’s last appearances in the ODI format, but it is worth remembering on nights like these. The 30-year-old is departing the scene at the peak of his powers, following a crisp 100 in the opening victory against Sri Lanka with this classy 91-ball jaunt to three figures. The 13 boundaries – five of them sixes – were crispy as you’d like against some of the most accomplished white ball bowlers on the circuit. Hundred No.19 was as much a reminder of the stock of a modern limited-overs great, as a word to the wise that South Africa are gunning for the their first world title. As poor as they were, Australia have cause to lament two decisions against them. Steven Smith was given out LBW as an on-field decision was overturned on DRS despite the naked eye suggesting the ball was on its way past leg stump. Of far greater doubt was the decision to send Marcus Stoinis on his way for a catch down the leg side. Stoinis’ bottom hand was off the bat when in contact with the ball, with television umpire Richard Kettleborough suggesting it was in contact with the top hand, which did not seem to be the case from the front-on view. Kagiso Rabada was the bowler to profit from both, finishing with impressive figures of 3 for 33.However, it will be far more productive for Australia to assess their own mistakes, missing an eye-watering seven chances in the first half of this counter. Temba Bavuma was on the right end of three of them. A top edge on 15 caught Adam Zampa lacking at deep third, before an edge off the leg spinner was missed with the Proteas skipper on 19. He was then lucky to continue his innings on 31 when a relay catch on the midwicket boundary could not be completed after substitute fielder Sean Abbott’s overarm toss back into play went over the head of Mitchell Starc.Quinton de Kock kicked off the 2023 World Cup with back-to-back tons•AFP/Getty Images

Pat Cummins then shelled a caught-and-bowled from Aiden Markram, allowing him to move on from 1 to 56 from 44 deliveries, before two more errors in the penultimate over of the innings; Starc shelled David Miller (on 10) at deep square leg and Stoinis botched a simpler opportunity at cover off Marco Jansen (25). Factor in a spurned run out of de Kock when looking for a single on 22 at the end of the sixth over, and the collective malaise tots up to a galling 170 runs. The crux of de Kock’s assault was the clarity of every shot in anger. The early swing and seam available to Starc and Josh Hazlewood, respectively, lent itself to a quiet start. The opening batter soon turned up the volume with a flick for six over square leg off the former, followed by a brace of fours, guided then driven square, off the latter, across the fifth and sixth over. His steady progress allowed Bavuma to go at his own pace, pitching in with 17 from the 53 managed in the powerplay, then 35 in the overall opening stand of 108 before falling to Maxwell to a catch at deep midwicket. Though Maxwell was able to follow that up with a maiden against de Kock in the 22nd over, the left-hander made amends in the 23rd with a brace of sixes over backward square leg off Hazlewood.A half-century stand for the second wicket ended with Rassie van der Dussen falling to Zampa, failing to clear straight where, this time, Abbott had enough room between him and the sponge to complete the dismissal himself. Eight deliveries later, de Kock heaved over the leg side for his fifth six to bring up his third ODI hundred against Australia. With the score 171 for 2 and 20 overs remaining, the threat of an insurmountable total was taking its toll on Cummins, evident when he burned a review against de Kock – on 104 – for a speculative outside edge off his own bowling. But the wicket they craved would come, de Kock trying to force the issue with a reverse sweep that made its way onto his own stumps. That was the second batter to fall to Maxwell, who would eventually close out his 10 overs without conceding a boundary as they continued to flow elsewhere. Markram and Heinrich Klassen combined to heap more misery on Hazlewood in the 38th, with three boundaries in an over costing 14. The pair brought up another fifty stand – this one off 41 deliveries. Markram would take as many himself to bring up one of his own in the midst of Zampa’s final two overs getting carted for 25.Kagiso Rabada was at the centre of South Africa’s bowling excellence•ICC/Getty Images

At that point – 263 for 3 with seven overs to go – Australia began to pull things back with pace-off deliveries. Cummins nabbed Markram with a cutter guided to backward point, then Klaasen top-edged Hazlewood’s slower bumper through to Inglis – both in the space of seven deliveries.Starc was struck for a six by Jansen, who then skewed over third up in the ring for four. The left-armer then dropped Miller on 10, having seemingly caught a tough chance at backward square leg only for the ball to pop out as he bumped to the ground. Two balls later, Stoinis shelled an easier high chance at cover for Jansen’s life.Starc would close things out emphatically – Warner catching Jansen, Miller yorked – in a final over which would reap just one run via a leg bye. Australia looked back in contention with the damage from the final seven overs limited to just 48 runs.Unfortunately, South Africa’s quicks had been taking notes. And in among the movement with the two shiny new Kookaburras were variations that accounted for Australia’s openers Mitchell Marsh and David Warner in seven deliveries up to the end of the seventh over. Marsh skied to Bavuma at mid off after Jansen got a delivery to stop in the pitch, before Warner slapped a similar ball straight to cover in the second of Lungi Ngidi’s two maidens in the first four overs of his 50th ODI.Then came Smith’s contentious LBW appeal, having struck two crisp fours off Rabada, who left nothing up for debate when squaring up Inglis to take out the right-hander’s off stump. When Maxwell’s leading edge gave Keshav Maharaj a simple return catch, Australia’s goose was well and truly cooked at 65 for 5 with 247 still required from 33.5 overs.A defiant stand of 69 – the second highest of the match – was put together by Marnus Labuschagne and Starc after Stoinis fell. The aim was solely NRR preservation, clawing back what pride they could before extra bounce from Jansen and a chip to cover off Maharaj saw another two dismissals.Cummins and Zampa heaved for 32 more between them, before Tabraiz Shamsi – playing instead of Gerald Coetzee – took two in three, Cummins and Hazlewood skying into the off side, to have something to show for his day.The moment of victory arrived with 9.1 overs to go. But really, the match was done a long time before.

Worth more than James: Chelsea have struck gold on "unbelievable" talent

Chelsea have conducted excellent business in the transfer market over the last couple of years, handing Enzo Maresca the platform to be a success.

The Italian has a superb squad at his disposal, having depth in key areas, helping them sit in fourth place in the Premier League – aiming to secure a Champions League place come the end of the campaign.

However, mixing that with the superb academy facilities in West London makes for a great combination, with numerous players making the jump into the senior ranks over the years.

Levi Colwill has cemented his place in Maresca’s backline over the last few months, starting all but two of the league outings since his appointment in the summer.

He’s often been partnered by another player who emerged through the ranks at Cobham, making a name for himself with his excellent performances since his debut.

Reece James’ stats for Chelsea in 2024/25

Full-back Reece James has been a player who has had his injury struggles in recent years, restricting his progress for Chelsea and holding him back from his full potential.

The 25-year-old has made just 11 Premier League appearances in 2024/25, but has still managed to impress, leading to an England call-up for the current international break.

He’s managed to complete 90% of the passes he’s attempted, whilst also creating 0.9 chances per game – having a huge impact in attacking areas despite his defensive role.

James has also managed to catch the eye defensively, winning 5.4 duels per 90 to date, along with 1.1 interceptions – helping the side keep six clean sheets in the league this season.

However, despite his impressive showings after his latest setbacks, he’s now valued lower than one player who’s often filled the void in his absence in recent times.

The Chelsea player who’s worth more than James

His injury issues have allowed numerous players to stake their claim at right-back under Maresca – numerous of whom have featured out of position.

Trevoh Chalobah and Wesley Fofana are just two players who have operated in the aforementioned department but have struggled to match the performance levels of one other first-team member.

Malo Gusto has developed well since his £26m move to join the Blues back in January 2023, providing the goods at right-back within Maresca’s side.

The Frenchman has already featured 66 times for the Blues, with 29 of which coming in the current campaign, the majority of which have been in the Premier League.

He’s impressed in numerous key areas, outperforming James in various departments and showcasing the rise he’s endured since his big-money transfer.

Gusto, who’s previously been dubbed “unbelievable” by journalist Nizaar Kinsella has managed to complete more progressive carries and achieve a higher pass accuracy, highlighting the threat he carries in attack.

However, he’s also managed to win more tackles per 90, whilst also making more blocks, having that defensive solidity to help Maresca in his quest for Champions League football.

As a result of his showings, the 21-year-old has seen his market value to £30m as per Transfermarkt, a fee higher than that of James, who’s only valued at £25m after his injury issues.

Such a deal is evident that the club have recruited well in the transfer market, making the right call in investing in young talents and handing them the platform to improve.

With Gusto and James both on the books, it’s safe to say that the department should be sorted for years to come, with the pair having the opportunity to write themselves in Blues history.

+ Confira e simule a tabela do Campeonato Brasileiro

A abordagem, contudo, desagradou o atual coordenador técnico do São Paulo.

Tottenham also held talks to sign "powerful" forward before Mathys Tel

Tottenham Hotspur also held talks over signing a “powerful” forward for manager Ange Postecoglou, before the Lilywhites’ successful attempts to get a deal for Mathys Tel over the line, in what is a seismic deadline day twist.

Tottenham close in on Mathys Til deal after transfer twist

While Spurs are believed to be in the market for another centre-back after Danso – who arrived on loan with the obligation to buy around £21 million from Ligue 1 side RC Lens, Postecoglou has been personally keen on acquiring another forward for his injury-ridden squad.

Ange Postecoglou wants a new forward.

Tottenham phoned Aston Villa to ask about Leon Bailey and the Jamaica international’s availability in the build up to deadline day, according to Fabrizio Romano, and a new attacker remained among Postecoglou’s main priorities.

It is never an uneventful day for Spurs, with news now emerging that Tel has pulled a major U-turn on a transfer to north London.

The Bundesliga sensation publicly rejected Tottenham’s advances last week, snubbing chairman Daniel Levy in the process, who flew to Munich for talks and came home empty-handed (Florian Plettenberg).

In a sensational turn of events, Tel has now changed his mind and decided to sign for Spurs after all, and the 19-year-old will join on a straight season-long loan.

With a deal for Tel now in place, Postecoglou will be over the moon, especially after a few unsuccessful approaches for other forwards this month.

According to reliable journalist Dan Kilpatrick of Standard Sport, Tottenham also held talks over signing Tyler Dibling before they eventually pulled off a move for Tel.

After Tel returns to Munich from his loan, perhaps it could be one to revisit in the summer, as it is clear the teenager is set for a very bright future.

The 18-year-old has seriously stood out for Ivan Juric’s side as one to watch for the future, racking up four goals and two assists in all competitions, and Dibling arguably suits Tottenham down to the ground in terms of being homegrown with plenty of resale value.

“He is a beautiful footballer, a really outstanding talent. He’s powerful. He possesses stuff that not every player possesses,” said former Southampton manager Russell Martin before the club’s 5-3 Carabao Cup win over Cardiff, where Dibling notched two assists.

“I love working with him. I love watching him play. I’d pay a lot of money to watch him play football.”

Marquinhos salary: How much does Paris Saint-Germain star earn per week and annually in Ligue 1?

Ever since his arrival from Roma in 2013 at just 18 years old, Brazilian centre back Marquinhos has remained loyal to the city of Paris. Now, over a decade later, he leads Paris Saint-Germain as club captain and holds the record for the most appearances in PSG history.

Marquinhos has always been adored by PSG fans, especially since taking over the captaincy from his long-time centre-back partner, fellow Brazilian Thiago Silva, following his departure in 2020.

Still performing at the top level, Marquinhos signed a five-year contract extension with the club in 2023, keeping him at the Parc des Princes until 2028.

Unsurprisingly, Marquinhos ranks among the highest-paid players at both PSG and in Ligue 1. But how much does he earn exactly?

USMNT Form Power Rankings: Haji Wright, Josh Sargent and Tim Ream lead the way as Christian Pulisic and AC Milan hit late-season struggles

GOAL takes a look at which American players are playing the best near the end of the European season and with the Gold Cup coming this summer

The CONCACAF Gold Cup is less than two months away, with two international friendlies in June fast approaching. For U.S. men's national team players hoping to earn a call-up, this stretch is crucial. After a disappointing Nations League campaign in March, the USMNT needs a strong response – and that starts with individual players stepping up.

In England, both Josh Sargent and Haji Wright are in fantastic form in the Championship. Sargent is leading front line and is their second-top scorer with 15 goals, and has been scoring for fun lately in the second division. Wright, meanwhile, looks like a new player under the leadership of Frank Lampard as he spearheads the promotion playoff push.

In the Premier League, Tyler Adams has become a mainstay in Bournemouth's midfield in recent months as Andoni Iraola's men search for European football in 2025-26 as the campaign nears a close.

Christian Pulisic, meanwhile, is doing what he can to lead AC Milan to glory this season – but has been surrounded by inconsistency both on the pitch and on the touchline, and it's hit both him and the hard in recent weeks.

Stateside, defender Tim Ream is flourishing under Dean Smith with Charlotte FC. Playing as a left back or left center back, the 36-year-old does not look like he's anywhere near ready to hang up his boots for club or country.

From established USMNT starters to those pushing for a breakthrough, these are the American stars thriving at the club level. This is not a ranking of the best players, overall, but rather a snapshot of who is showing the best form at the moment. GOAL takes a look in this recurring feature tracking the pulse of U.S. talent worldwide.

    5Christian Pulisic – AC Milan

Pulisic, by all accounts, has been AC Milan's best player in the 2024-25 season – and it's not particularly close, either. However, he hasn't been at his best of late – even if he remains a bright spot in otherwise disappointing season for the storied club.

Since returning from the CONCACAF Nations League, he's recorded two assists across all competitions in five appearances – all of which were starts. He's hit a scoring drought, though. His last goals came ahead of the March tournament when he bagged in back-to-back Serie A matches – and even with the U.S. in March, he went without any goal contribution in the two-match span.

The in general, have been in a slump, too, with just one win across those five matches. Their schedule hasn't been friendly, with the likes of Napoli, Inter, Atalanta, and Fiorentina all on the plate in recent weeks, but the club – and Pulisic – are in a state of stagnation at the moment.

The U.S. will need their talisman to step it up to an even higher level as the campaign comes to a close, as they'll be relying on him immensely this summer at the Gold Cup to help them get their first win since 2021. At the club level, with Serie A and a top-four Champions League spot already out of reach, all the have left to compete for is the Coppa Italia title – and they meet Inter in leg two of the semifinals on Wednesday. Winning that trophy would secure a ticket to the Europa League next season.

Over the past month, he hasn't been at his best, but Pulisic is still performing at an incredibly high level with nine goals and eight assists in Serie A this season. Expectations are, though, that he meets a slightly higher standard than where he sits right now.

    4Josh Sargent – Norwich City

Since returning from the Nations League, Sargent has scored three goals in six games. The U.S. striker has shown versatility in front of net all three times, scoring first with his left boot and then two times with his right. He's become an incredible poacher of a striker at the Championship level, though the have struggled overall of late. Winless in their last five matches, they're not bound for promotion – or even a playoff spot – after a tough stretch.

At the March break, they were in pole position to contend for a playoff spot, but recent struggles will have them confirmed to be competing in the Championship next season once again. Manager Johannes Hoff Thorup was sacked on Tuesday, and former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has been promoted to interim manager through the remainder of the campaign as a result.

Sargent, though, has been one of the lone bright spots around the club of late. He's stood out in the final third, and really shown that even though his team might be underperforming, he can still shine.

Although his scoring drought with the USMNT is a drastic one, dating back to 2019, he is the most in-form striker available to the U.S. at the moment. His season total in England is up to 15 goals and five assists in Championship play – and even though Norwich will be in the Championship next season, he may not be. The 24-year-old has been touted for a move to the top flight of England, or even elsewhere in Europe, as he gears up for the next steps of his career.

The lone question around him is if he can replicate it on the international stage, but at the same time, there's no denying he has been clinical in front of goal this season.

    3Tyler Adams – Bournemouth

The are flying at the moment, and a big part of that is due to Adams. They sit eighth in the Premier League on 49 points, and are still actively in the hunt for European soccer next season. There are multiple scenarios where an eighth-place finish could see them secure European competition next season, depending on the winners of the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference league this season. That hope itself is keeping their incredible season alive.

“We definitely don't want to get too ahead of ourselves. I think it's playing at [RB] Leipzig for four years and understanding what it takes to qualify for the Champions League every year and how enduring that challenge is,” he explained on the podcast this past week.

"I know what it requires to get to that point. You can't look ahead at games because I think when you start chasing results, that's when it becomes a little bit tricky and things slip up," he added. "So, again, we need to focus on good individual performances, collectively achieving the basics in what we've found to be successful. And then I think then you're looking at big-term goals. But if you look too far ahead of it, I think you slip up."

The U.S. captain has logged 1,530 minutes for the club this season, and since the flip of the calendar year, has locked in his midfield role. However, they hit a rough patch of form in February into early March – but have turned it around in recent weeks with a big win over Fulham, and draws against West Ham and Crystal Palace. Adams was crucial in all three games, specifically in their Fulham clash, where he played 90 minutes, locking down the middle of the park in a tight 1-0 win.

With everything on the line for 2025-26, he's stepped up in recent weeks while taking a leadership role on the pitch. If it pays off, it could earn the European football next year.

    2Haji Wright – Coventry City

Ahead of a promotion playoff push to the Premier League, Coventry City are benefiting from the resurgence of a red-hot Wright. The 26-year-old winger has scored five times since returning from injury in March, bringing his season total to 11 goals and one assist.

He recorded a hat-trick against Sunderland that month, then followed it up with a powerful finish in a narrow 2-1 loss to league leaders Burnley, who clinched promotion to the Premier League on Monday. Wright has made the most of his late-season opportunities and appears to be thriving under the guidance of Frank Lampard.

"Haji has a laid back way, which is his nature, but he wasn't laid back on the pitch today," Lampard said after his hat-trick in March. "And I have to say the way he moved and the way he won the penalty was high-level stuff from him. As long as he gets his off-the-ball work and transition work right, which he did today, I'm happy. He can play like that, he can run into space, he can hold it up and he can move with it, so yes, I loved his performance.”

Wright made his international debut under Mauricio Pochettino last October, assisting against Panama and coming off the bench in a loss to Mexico. Since then, injuries have kept him out of every senior team camp. But with the U.S. struggling during the March window, he could be a candidate to return this summer, either in the CONCACAF Gold Cup or the two June friendlies.

For the U.S., a striker in form is more than welcome. Wright might just be the answer to some of the problems that emerged last month.

Tasmania and Hurricanes in hunt for new women's coach as Salliann Beams takes high performance role

Beams had been set to take charge of Tasmania’s WNCL title defence

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Aug-2022Salliann Beams is set to step away from her successful coaching posts after being named Cricket Tasmania’s new general manager of high performance just a few months out from the start of the WNCL and WBBL.Beams coached Tasmania’s women’s team to the WNCL title last season and had signed an extension to remain coach of Hobart Hurricanes but has opted to move back into a high performance role taking over the job vacated by Simon Insley earlier this year.Beams is currently in the UK coaching the Trent Rockets in the women’s Hundred but will return to Australia to oversee Tasmania’s men’s and women’s cricket program, which will be a return to high performance and away from coaching, having previously been the Cricket Performance Manager at Loughborough University in England.”When I had the chance to sit back and really think about my own career progression, this is the direction I really want to head in as I am passionate about creating the best high performance systems and people,” Beams said.”I had a great working relationship with Simon and his departure was a surprise and I was really sad to see him go, and it wasn’t until the dust had settled from that that the potential of this opportunity really dawned on me.”Having signed a [head coach] contract extension back in May, this clearly wasn’t something I’d planned, but the opportunity to work in the male system while still working with the same players and staff in the women’s program made it really enticing to me.”Jeff [Vaughan, Tasmania and Hurricanes men’s head coach] and I have always collaborated really well together, and we have a great team of coaches and support staff across the entire department, so I’m looking forward to watching a lot of success unfold on the field this season across all five of our elite teams, as well as working to develop and implement the strategy of how we’re going to further improve Tasmanian elite cricket in the medium- to long-term.”The opportunity to stay within the organisation after leaving a head coaching role is an exciting one, and something I am grateful for. The organisation has achieved a lot in recent years and I can’t wait to play a role in ensuring Tasmanian cricket reaches its potential in the future.”Salliann Beams coached Tasmania coached Tasmania to the WNCL title last season•Getty ImagesIt leaves Cricket Tasmania searching for a new WBBL and WNCL coach with the season not too far away, but CEO Dominic Baker said the general manager appointment was a critical one to get right.”Filling such a crucial role like a high performance manager is always a mammoth task, and as you would expect, the quality of the applications we received was exceptional,” Baker said.”To have the best person for this role already within this organisation was a bonus for us. We pride ourselves on our people, and Salliann’s plan and vision for the future of high performance presented to us through the recruitment process was exceptional.”She has already shown us that she is a great coach, but as well as the technical side of things, she is an excellent strategist, and always looking for ways that we can be better, not just on the field in the short-term, but to ensure the future of Tasmanian cricket is sustainable for years to come.”

Lange working "under the radar" as Tottenham target "complete" centre-back

Tottenham Hotspur have a “complete” centre-back on their agenda for the January transfer window, according to reliable Standard Sport journalist Dan Kilpatrick, as technical director Johan Lange silently works on Spurs’ recruitment plans for the winter.

Postecoglou shared an update on Dragusin’s condition via his latest pre-match press conference, and the Australian says it is still too early to determine the extent of his issue, or whether he’ll be eligible for Wolves.

Ben Davies has suffered a setback in his recovery from injury, while both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are not expected to return until 2025. Postecoglou says Tottenham are working hard on potential January recruits amid this injury crisis at N17, as he pleads for reinforcements to strengthen the squad.

“Not in years but I think in the context of where we’re at at the moment I think it is an important one,” said Postecoglou when asked if this January is the most important transfer window in recent memory for Spurs.

“I think if we add what we need to add, and it fits the bill in what we’re trying to do… our league position is not great, but it’s super tight. and we’re not that far off. Like I say, we’re in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup and still in great position in Europe and there’s the FA Cup.

“There’s still everything to play for us this year to make it a season where we can have success. But we need some help, the players need some help more importantly, and the club is working really hard to try make that happen.”

Lange working "under the radar" as Tottenham target Abdukodir Khusanov

According to Kilpatrick and Standard Sport, Lange is likely to make “under the radar” signings in January, but a firm target for the Lilywhites is RC Lens defender Abdukodir Khusanov.

The young Uzbekistan international has impressed for Lens in Ligue 1 and could be available for around £25 million, according to other reports, which also suggest that Tottenham have come forward for Khusanov already in their search for central defensive options.

The reliable Kilpatrick confirms that Khusanov is indeed a January target for Tottenham, but they’re not alone in their admiration, as Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United also have the 20-year-old on their radar heading into next year.

“Kodir is very, very fast,” said Lens head coach Will Still on Khusanov’s ability.

“He’s an athlete. We joked that when he went to the Olympics, he could have done all sports with Uzbekistan, he’s so complete.”
