Glamorgan's silence golden for Maynard

Tom Maynard, the Surrey batsman, was given the silent treatment on his return to Cardiff last week but responded with an emotional maiden first-class hundred against his former team-mates at Glamorgan. The home side were told not to say a word when Maynard came to the crease even though the situation was perfectly set up for some ‘chat’ from the close fielders, but eventually the Glamorgan players couldn’t resist having a chirp as he finished with 123 in Surrey’s huge 575 for 7 declared.”They said they were told not to speak to me,” Maynard told ESPNcricinfo’s Switch Hit podcast. “There was a bit of silence for a while but once I got going there were a couple of guys who chirped in with some friendly banter, but nothing malicious. They were just trying to coax me into playing one of my erratic shots.”Maynard quit Glamorgan during the acrimonious winter which saw his father, Matthew, resign in protest at how the club was being run after Alviro Petersen, the South Africa batsman, had been secretly interviewed to be the new captain in place of Jamie Dalrymple. The fixture list meant an early return to Wales for Maynard jr and he was able to reach three figures for the first time as his dad watched from the stands.”It was fantastic to have him there,” he said. “I’d like to dedicate that innings to towards the family rather than anything malicious towards the management. I’d like to be something special for us to have. It was a surreal feeling especially going into the away dressing room. I’m just delighted about the outcome it’s just a shame we couldn’t win the game.”Despite wanting to remember the hundred without the baggage of what happened during the winter, Maynard isn’t shy at explaining why he left the club where his surname had become part of cricket history in Wales.”I just felt I couldn’t stay there with the people in charge and the management above the playing side,” he said. “I couldn’t stay and win games for some of the people who’d forced my father out and let the team down.”I’m still very tight with all the players and keep in touch with them a lot. That relationship is still very strong and none of the players have any animosity towards me. A lot of them sided with me and said if they’d had the opportunity to go after what happened then they would. I took advice from a couple of the players and they said I should go.”Although scoring the hundred against Glamorgan added extra meaning Maynard was just relieved to have registered his first ton having waited 38 innings. Last season he hit a low point where he could barely score a run but now feels he has a new lease of life.”To be honest it got to stage where I’d started so poorly in my first-class career that it couldn’t get any worse so I may as well go out and play freely,” he said. “It got to that stage at the back end of last year and from then on I’ve gone well. I’m looking forward to kicking on now this season.”The good news for Maynard is that he has another Championship match against Glamorgan at the end of May.

Australia must plan for the future – Steve Waugh

Steve Waugh has praised the togetherness of an England squad that he believes are favourites to secure the Ashes with victory in the third Test at Perth, but says that the time has come for Australia’s selectors to identify the men that they believe can return the Test team to winning ways, and then back them through thick and thin – in much the same way that he himself was given time to learn his game in the early years of his own international career.Though Waugh finished his career with a formidable record of 10927 runs in 168 Test appearances, his early days coincided with the absolute nadir of Australia’s fortunes, as he was selected on a whim as a 20-year-old allrounder in December 1985, in a team that had been ravaged by the retirements of three key players in Greg Chappell, Dennis Lillee and Rod Marsh, as well as a raft of defections to a rebel tour of South Africa.”Allan Border was captain and he’d played more Tests than the rest of the team combined,” Waugh recalled. “That’s a very inexperienced side, this side has still got some experience and good players. But what the selectors have got to do now, that they did then, was have belief in the younger players that they pick. Say, look, we believe in you, you’re the future of Australian cricket, and you’re going to have a bit of leeway.”It’s not always going to be successful all days, and I guess I was the perfect example,” he added. “I didn’t score a hundred until my 26th Test, I never won a Test until my 13th Test for Australia, so you’ve got to see the bigger picture. You can’t just chop and change, if someone fails in one Test and doesn’t look the goods, you’ve got to give them an opportunity.”With that in mind, Waugh was especially critical of the treatment meted out to the left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty, who has been jettisoned from the squad after just two Test appearances, in favour of Western Australia’s Michael Beer. “We’ve been going through a lot of players,” he said, “but you don’t just chop and change for the sake of it.”It’s a great honour to play for your country, and I feel disappointed for someone like Doherty who’s played two Tests and now he’s gone. I think you pick a player, believe in them, and give them a good opportunity, and you don’t change that side unless you believe you can improve the side by getting another player in.”Speaking at the MCC World Cricket Committee meeting in Perth, Waugh believed that Australia’s spirit in adversity would give them a fighting chance in the forthcoming contest, but backed England’s greater cohesion to hold sway – an upshot, he added, that would heap huge pressure on Ricky Ponting’s tenure as Australia’s captain.”Ricky acknowledged [the pressure] at the start of the series,” said Waugh. “He would be thinking he can turn it around because that’s always been the case for Australian sides that I’ve played in, but questions will be asked for sure if they lose this series. It’s unlikely, looking at form, that they can turn this around, but anything can happen in sport, particularly on this unique wicket which is like no other pitch in the world. It’s only 1-0 down in the five-Test series, and the great uncertainty is what keeps us coming back.”England, however, have looked a formidable unit in the series to date, and Waugh – who has never been shy of stating his opinion on previous Ashes squads – believes that the influence of Andy Flower has been instrumental in moulding an outfit that is becoming the team best placed to inherit Australia’s mantle as the world’s No. 1 side.”They’ve impressed me for a couple of years,” he said. “I noticed the turnaround when England drew three Test matches having lost nine wickets in the fourth innings [at Cardiff, Centurion and Cape Town]. That showed to me a side that was together. Sides that aren’t strong don’t survive those sorts of matches.”That was a turning point for English cricket,” he added. “They look like they enjoy each other’s company, they are playing for each other, and they’ve prepared very well. I like the fact that Flower is their coach, behind the scenes and low-key. They look like they all know their roles and they are playing some good cricket.”All great eras have to come to an end,” he added. “I guess we modelled a bit of our cricket on the great West Indies era, because if you’re smart you look at the best and what they are doing, and look at their blueprint, and modify it to suit your needs. I think you can see England have done that with their cricket. They’ve looked at how we’ve been successful, altered it to suit their players, and now they’re playing their own style.”The net result is an Australian side with no choice but to go for broke in a bid to avoid their first home Ashes defeat in 24 years. “What option have they got?” said Waugh. “They were totally outplayed on a flat pitch at Adelaide. You’ve got to say England were dominant and that will have hurt the Australian side, particularly Ricky. They’ll give everything they’ve got in this Test, and I expect them to really firing up on the first morning, being really positive in their body language, and with a couple of younger players so I expect to see more energy in the field.”It’s a huge Test, and it’s going to be on,” he added. “The WACA is a great place to watch and play Test cricket, the quicks can get it through, it’s exciting, and more than likely it’s a place where players can get injured if they are not switched on. It’s going to be a bit of a battlefield out there.”

Liverpool eye Jude Bellingham move

Liverpool are among the leading candidates to sign Jude Bellingham.

What’s the word?

That’s according to German outlet BILD, who report that Real Madrid and Liverpool are “already closely monitoring” Bellingham’s development.

The newspaper stated that the England star is the most expensive 18-year-old footballer in the world, whilst being priceless for Dortmund.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

BILD state that Bellingham’s status in the Dortmund hierarchy is expected to rise next season, with the leadership issues at BVB serving as a problem for the Signal Iduna Park side.

The fee may set Liverpool back though, with the German outlet stating this. “One thing is clear: if the ‘BellingBOOM’ continues at this breathtaking pace, the Dortmund diamond will soon become the next ‘over 100 million deal’ for Borussia.”

Worth every penny

From what we have seen of Bellingham so far, along with the metrics that he has produced during his developmental and prosperous time at Dortmund, he is worth every penny of the estimated €100m price tag.

The exchange rate would actually see Bellingham valued at around £83m, bringing the fee closer to his current market value which currently sits at £67.5m according to Transfermarkt.

Though, for an 18-year-old who has been described as a “leader” by teammate Mats Hummels and a “sensation” as per BT Sport, a £100m price tag would still seem worth it – given his identity as a current player, whilst bearing in mind his almost limitless potential.

The England wonderkid who stands at 5 foot 11 has asserted himself as a Dortmund regular ever since his move from Birmingham City in 2020.

This season has seen a big improvement in his goal contributions, with the £49k-per-week talent netting six goals and producing 13 assists in 40 appearances in all competitions.

Even more impressive though, is his record in the Champions League this season. With four goal contributions in six appearances, in the form of one goal and three assists, Bellingham has demonstrated his prowess as a big-game player.

A key attribute that Klopp and the Reds faithful will appreciate though is his ability to lead.

After the 4-1 defeat to RB Leipzig, Bellingham was the only player to stand in front of the fans and applaud them, an act that has made him the new “darling” of the BVB fanbase.

Leeds: Insider drops Jesse Marsch claim

A huge Leeds United claim has emerged over current head coach Jesse Marsch’s impact since arriving…

What’s the talk?

Eurosport transfer insider Dean Jones has claimed that the American boss has been catching the eye behind the scenes since replacing Marcelo Bielsa at the helm.

He told GIVEMESPORT:

“The impact he’s made on the club has been really significant already and everybody loves him.

“We’ll have to see how it pans out but Leeds is quite a positive environment, and they’re positive they can fix whatever comes along.”

Supporters will be bouncing

This will surely leave the Leeds supporters bouncing as it shows that his appointment has been a success beyond the results on the pitch.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-marsch-raphinha-dest-philhay” title=”Read the latest Leeds news!”]

The Lillywhites were in a precarious position in the Premier League towards the end of Bielsa’s reign at Elland Road and relegation was looking like a real possibility as they sat just above the bottom three.

They had won five of their 26 league matches under the Argentine coach, picking up 0.88 points per game before he left the Yorkshire outfit.

There has been a big uplift in form since Marsch came through the door.

In his six top-flight matches in charge of the club so far, he has won three, drawn one and lost two – picking up 1.67 points per game. This suggests that he has been able to get the best out of the players in a way that Bielsa was failing to do in his final months with the team.

Leeds’ impressive form since his arrival may be down to the impact he has made behind the scenes. Jones has claimed that he is making it a positive environment and that could explain why the players are now showing the best of their abilities as they are enjoying their football again.

Fans will love this for the impact that it has had this season and will be bouncing ahead of the 2022/23 campaign as they can get excited about what is to come.

Marsch will be given the summer to bring in his own players with Victor Orta to prepare for a full season in charge of the Lillywhites.

His short time in Yorkshire so far indicates that it could be an exciting year for the supporters to look forward to if he is able to strengthen the squad and get the players on-board to kick on and challenge higher up the table.

Spurs: Journalist drops big Dybala update

Taking to Twitter, journalist Giacomo Iacobellis has shared a transfer update out of Tottenham Hotspur involving Juventus forward Paulo Dybala.

The Lowdown: Dybala set to leave…

As reported by reliable transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano, the Argentine is set to leave Turin at the end of this season as a free agent as he seeks to open talks with new clubs.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

This comes after Juve had originally reached a verbal agreement to extend Dybala’s deal last October, but after the Serie A giants changed terms and conditions of this proposal, it appears the 28-year-old is now seeking pastures new.

As his contract winds down, currently set to expire on June 30, many clubs are now keeping real tabs with Spurs said to be in and among the interested parties.

The Latest: Iacobellis shares update…

Now, according to Iacobellis, there has been an update on Tottenham’s attempts for Dybala with talks now held.

Indeed, the Lilywhites have apparently made contact with his entourage alongside a host of other clubs as they make a pre-summer move.

He explained (via Twitter):

“About Dybala : The two most interested teams today are Inter and Atletico Madrid , although the player’s entourage also talked to FC Barcelona , Arsenal , PSG and Tottenham . On July 1, he will leave the Juventus as a free agent after 7 seasons.”

The Verdict: A must-win race?

Dybala has plied his trade at the very top level for years, racking up a grand total of 113 goals and 48 assists in 283 appearances for Juve.

Taking this into account, especially on a free deal, he could be a very shrewd option to provide support for superstar striker Harry Kane.

Personal terms could be a slight stumbling block given his current £220,000-per-week salary would make him the highest-paid player in Tottenham’s squad according to spotrac.

That being said, it could be too great an opportunity to sign a player once valued at around €120 million (£102m) for nothing.

Pundits in the English press have also gushed over Dybala’s abilities with ex-Spurs keeper Paul Robinson branding him ‘world class’.

On a free deal, it has to be considered at the very least, especially if they can convince the player to take a slight wage hit.

Nazimuddin, Faisal put Bangladesh A on track

ScorecardBangladesh A worked themselves into a position of comfort thanks to fighting knocks from Nazimuddin and Faisal Hossain who capitalised on five-wicket hauls from Syed Rasel and Suhrawadi Shuvo. At stumps, Faisal held fort for the hosts, who were 64 adrift of first-innings honours, with an unbeaten 64 inclusive of six fours and four sixes, having realised 75 for the unbroken sixth-wicket with Saghir Hossain.Brendan Nash, who began the day on 64, held the key for West Indies A to aim for a 300-plus score. Bangladesh focused on prising wickets at the other end, and as on day one, it was down to Rasel and Shuvo to make the break-throughs. 26 runs had been added when Shuvo got Gavin Tonge to play back to him for a well-deserved five-for. Rasel responded promptly from the other end, packing off numbers 10 and 11, as Nash was left stranded one short of three-figures.Nelon Pascal accounted for Shahriar Nafees early to thwart the hosts’ reply before Mehrab Hossain and Nazimuddin steadied things. Mehrab had worked his way to 29 with five fours when Shane Shillingford got the better of him. Odean Brown then got into the thick of things, accounting for three wickets – two as a bowler, and one as a fielder – in the space of 13 overs. Raqibul Hasan offered a catch to Shillingford and Farhad Hossain was struck in front of the stumps to leave the hosts stuttering at 107 for 4. The big fish succumbed soon after, as Brown ran Nazimuddin out for a fine 72 off 123 balls, inclusive of 12 fours. The hosts’ hopes of securing a first-innings advantage looked bleak at that stage, but by stumps Faisal and Saghir had brought their side right back into the contest, leaving them with a good chance of dictating terms on Day 3.

Leeds still eyeing up last-gasp business

Leeds United are still looking to complete some last-gasp transfer business on deadline day, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Quiet January at Leeds

There was hope that the Whites would make some reinforcements in the January transfer window given their injury crisis, in order to stave off the threat of relegation from the Premier League.

Leeds have instead done no significant business, however, with Marcelo Bielsa looking like having to make do with the current squad at his disposal.

With the hours ticking by on deadline day, though, a fresh claim suggests all may not be lost regarding transfers.

[freshpress-quiz id=“383507″]

The Latest: Journalist makes late claim

Speaking to Give Me Sport on Monday evening, O’Rourke said the club are still trying to bring in a new face before the deadline passes:

“I think ideally, Marcelo Bielsa would love to make a few new signings just to freshen up the squad right now. I think it’s going to be a frustrating one for Leeds. Maybe a Kennedy or Minamino on loan from Chelsea and Liverpool, respectively, would help boost Bielsa’s ranks.

“So, I’m sure Victor Orta and Bielsa are working hard on the transfer front to see if they can bring somebody in, but right now, you’re probably looking at loan deals rather than permanent ones.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-33/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Seems unlikely

Any new signing now would feel like a huge bonus for Leeds, with the club surely completing any business they genuinely wanted by this point.

Someone like the heavily-linked Brenden Aaronson coming in from RB Salzburg would be ideal, given his reputation as a goalscoring midfielder, netting 10 times in 51 appearances for the Austrian champions.

It seems far more likely that Bielsa will have to get by between now and May as it is, however, battling on without key men such as Kalvin Phillips and Patrick Bamford, both of whom are currently out injured.

– As vaias me deram força, to sujeito a isso, porque minha forma de jogar é pra frente, arriscando. Isso me fortalece, e passar por isso, recupera a confiança e requer uma dedicação grande. A cobrança é grande, mas nunca me faltou apoio.
