Man Utd now keen on "obscene" £35m target who’s 99th percentile for tackles

The transfer window has been closed for nearly two weeks now, but Manchester United are still continually being linked with new players as INEOS plan more business for the 2025 windows.

Erik ten Hag was backed by INEOS during the summer, as the club added three defenders, a midfielder, and a forward to their squad. But that doesn’t appear to be enough so far, as the Red Devils still have their eye on some big-name players.

United are well stocked in the goalkeeping department; Andre Onana currently has the number one spot, followed by Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaten providing backup, but they are also eyeing a change in that area of the pitch.

It has been reported that Man United are “very interested” in signing Athletic Bilbao’s Unai Simon. The goalkeeper has been really impressive for the La Liga side in recent seasons and has now established himself on the international stage with Spain, playing a key role in their Euro 2024 success.

Those performances have caught the attention of United, who are said to be willing to pay a “considerable sum” to sign the shot stopper. While United weigh up a move for Simon, they are also looking at signing another established international star.

Man Utd now keen on "obscene" £35m target

According to Caught Offside, Manchester United are admirers of AS Monaco defender Vanderson. The report states that fellow Premier League side Chelsea are showing the most interest in the player, but United and Tottenham Hotspur are in the mix.

The 23-year-old, who has been with Monaco since January 2022, has really impressed for the French side lately. Vanderson played 20 times in Ligue 1 last season, scoring three goals and chipping in with one assist. The defender is in the 99th percentile for tackles when compared with right-backs in similar leagues, and FBRef ranks his combination of ferocious defending and attacking quality as a similar profile to Tottenham's Pedro Porro.

Vanderson, who has been described as having "obscene pace and acceleration" by U23 scout Antonio Mango, was linked with an exit during the summer, but Monaco selling Youssouf Fofana to AC Milan eased any pressure they were under to sell. The right-back, who has been capped twice by Brazil, is contracted until 2028, but the French side could be willing to let the player leave for around €35-40 million, which is roughly £29-35 million.

Vanderson has started this 2024/25 season strongly, starting two of Monaco’s three league games, grabbing the assist in their opening day win against Saint-Étienne.

Farke could ease James injury blow by unleashing amazing Leeds academy star

Leeds United return to action in the Championship on Saturday as they travel away from Elland Road to take on Cardiff City in Wales in their sixth league outing of the season.

The Whites will be looking to bounce back from their disappointing 1-0 defeat to Burnley in West Yorkshire last weekend, thanks to a goal from Luca Koleosho.

Daniel Farke’s side will be without Dan James once again as the Wales international remains sidelined with a hamstring injury, which is expected to keep him out until after the international break in October.

Dan James

His absence is a blow for the German head coach because he has proven himself to be a very capable Championship performer over the past 13 months.

Dan James' Championship form for Leeds

The Welsh speedster started this season with one goal and zero assists in the first three matches of the second tier campaign, scoring in the 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday in the club’s first win.

This comes after his superb performances in the division during the 2023/24 campaign under Farke, as Leeds finished third in the league and lost in the play-off final.

As you can see in the table above, James provided regular quality as both a scorer and a creator of goals from a right wing position for the Whites.

The 26-year-old star was a reliable goalscoring outlet for Leeds and Farke could ease the blow of losing him to injury by unleashing a goalscoring forward from the academy – Luca Thomas.

Why Luca Thomas should be unleashed

The amazing U21s starlet was once described as a “versatile” attacker by journalist Graham Smyth, which is backed up by his ability to play on either flank or through the middle as a centre-forward.

This means that Farke could utilise him in a multitude of roles, whether that is on the right as a direct replacement for James, or as depth on the left wing and at striker.

Thomas has started this season with two goals in two Premier League 2 matches for the U21 side and boasts an impressive record at U21 and U18 level.

The former Manchester City gem racked up 23 goals and three assists in 32 appearances for the U18s before stepping up to the next age group at Thorp Arch.

Since making the step up, the versatile talent has produced eight goals and four assists in 27 games for the U21s, with all of those goal contributions coming in his last 20 outings at that level.

Thomas, who turned 20 this week, has proven himself to be a reliable goalscoring outlet for the U18s and U21s as a winger or striker and Farke should now unleash him in the first-team to see if he can handle another step up, to ease the blow of losing James to injury.

Summerville rates him: Leeds academy star could be Ampadu 2.0 for Farke

Former Whites star Crysencio Summerville thinks the young gem is “really good”.

If he can translate his academy form over to the senior side then the German head coach could have his next Archie Gray and Mateo Joseph on his hands.

Rising temperatures force PCB to shift women's camp to Karachi

Temperatures in Multan have touched over 40 degrees over the past week

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Jun-2021Rising summer temperatures have led to the PCB shifting a training camp of Pakistan Women from Multan to Karachi.Last week, ESPNcricinfo had highlighted how big a challenge the extreme weather – where temperatures have hovered over 42 degrees Celsius – would pose for the 26-member contingent during their 25-day camp in Multan. At the time, while acknowledging the severity of the conditions, the PCB has said it had few other options but to hold the camp in Multan, given numerous challenges including the need to prepare a bio-secure bubble in the time of the Covid-19 pandemic.Karachi had been earlier ruled out due to a surge in covid-19 cases, while grounds in Central Punjab, according to Urooj Mumtaz, the chair of the PCB’s women’s selection committee, are presently undergoing renovation.Historically during the summer months, the PCB has mostly held camps in Abbottabad, which is located in the hilly Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province and experiences relatively temperate weather. This move comes seven days into the camp, with the women’s team now set to train at Hanif Mohammad Hig Performance Centre. The Multan camp will be wrapped up by Monday, with all players and support staff likely to travel to Lahore by road on Tuesday morning, before boarding a flight to Karachi the next day. The revised camp will resume from Wednesday, with the team spending another 18 days in Karachi as part of the originally designed 25-day camp, which is set to conclude on June 22.The PCB and SLC are understood to be in talks for a potential series in Sri Lanka in July, Wirth the camp serving as preparation for the series. Pakistan are also slated to play in the 50-overs Women’s World Cup Qualifier that is scheduled to take place in Sri Lanka in December.

Imagine him & Carter-Vickers: Celtic lining up move for "incredible" gem

The summer transfer window officially slams shut in less than seven days and Celtic do not have much time left to get their remaining business over the line.

So far, the Hoops have brought in Viljami Sinisalo, Kasper Schmeichel, Paulo Bernardo, and Adam Idah on permanent deals, with the latter two having been on loan at Parkhead last term.

Brendan Rodgers is reportedly in the market to make further additions to his playing squad with the Scottish giants before the deadline passes next Friday, though.

The Northern Irish head coach is looking to bring in reinforcements for his defensive unit in Glasgow, with a Championship defender on the club's radar.

Celtic's interest in American titan

According to The Scottish Sun, Rodgers is lining up a late Celtic swoop to sign Sheffield United central defender Auston Trusty before the end of the window.

The report claims that the Hoops are interested in signing the USA international to bolster their defence, a year on from his £5m move to the Blades from Arsenal.

It states that Sheffield United are keen on a deal for Bhoys winger Mikey Johnston, who returned to Glasgow this summer after a loan spell with West Bromwich Albion, and that he could be used as part of a move for Trusty.

However, the outlet does not reveal whether it could be a straight swap or if one team would offer a player and some money in exchange to make a transfer happen, so it remains to be seen how viable it is at the moment.

If Celtic do manage to secure a swoop for the USA international before the end of the window, though, he could come in as an excellent partner for Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Why Celtic should sign Auston Trusty

Firstly, signing another left-footed defender, who can play at centre-back or left-back, makes perfect sense when Liam Scales and Greg Taylor are the only two in the first-team squad.

Trusty could come in to provide both players with competition for their place in the team, particularly for Scales in the left centre-back position, as that is the American's natural role.

He is a naturally left-footed player and could complement Carter-Vickers, who is a right-footed defender and operates on the right side of the pairing, whilst they have already played alongside each other for USA U20s in the past.

As you can see in the table above, Trusty enjoyed far more success on loan with Birmingham in the Championship than he did as part of a Sheffield United team that picked up just 16 points in the Premier League last season.

The 26-year-old titan, who was hailed as "incredible" by former teammate George Friend, won the majority of his duels on the ground and in the air without making a single error that led to a shot or goal in the second tier in England.

If he can recapture that form then he could be a reliable and dominant partner for Carter-Vickers, who won 68% of his duels in the Scottish Premiership last term,

Rodgers could brilliantly replace Oh with Celtic move for "improving" star

The Hoops are reportedly considering a swoop for the young centre-forward this summer.

Trusty would then provide competition for Scales on the left side of the centre-back pairing and they would both offer a left-footed balance next to the former Spurs man.

Ben Davies is the new Paolo Maldini: James Maddison pays tribute to 'Mr Reliable' for top performance in Tottenham's 4-0 win away at crisis club Man City

Spurs achieved a remarkable 4-0 victory at City on Saturday night, despite missing both starting centre-backs Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero. Radu Dragusin and Davies came in to replace them, and in an impressive display, limited City and Haaland to nothing more than half chances, leading to Maddison comparing the Welshman to AC Milan icon Paolo Maldini.

Many saw this game as a chance for Man City to end a four game losing streak. With the same centre-back pairing, Spurs lost 3-2 to Turkish side Galatasaray in the Europa League, where the two stand-ins struggled to keep up with Victor Osimhen.

However, this story was very different. In a heroic and composed display, Dragusin and Davies were on top of Haaland for almost the entire 90 minutes, and the big Norwegian could only watch difficult chances pass him by.

In an Instagram story published on Sunday, Maddison posted a photoshopped image of Maldini with Davies' head on, captioning: "You lot are too quick man. All joking aside what a shift yesterday from Mr Reliable."

The Red Devils were in search of an attacking option in the summer transfer window and eventually signed Netherlands international Zirkzee from Bologna on a £36.5 million ($47m) deal. After displaying exceptional form for the Italian club in the 2023-24 season that saw them secure a Champions League spot, Zirkzee was expected to shine at Old Trafford right from the off.

However, Zirkzee has failed to live up to expectations so far at United, scoring just one goal and providing two assists in 17 appearances in the 2024-25 campaign. This has reportedly alarmed bosses at Old Trafford who could consider parting ways with him after just six months, according to .

GettyWHAT NEXT FOR MANCHESTER UNITED?

The Ruben Amorim era at Old Trafford will formally start after the international break when United take on Ipswich Town in a Premier League clash on November 24.

Nottingham Forest hit gold on ace who’s worth more than Anderson & Niakhate

Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espírito Santo has the opportunity to make his mark on the squad this summer for the first time since his arrival at the club back in December.

The former Wolves manager replaced Steve Cooper halfway through the campaign, unable to fully implement his system across to the players, but showing glimpses of promise towards the end of the season.

He was heavily reliant on striker Chris Wood to do the business for the Reds, with the New Zealand international scoring 14 Premier League goals – proving a lot of doubters wrong in the process.

However, with the new season just over a month away now, the Reds boss will still want to invest further into his playing squad to pull further clear of the drop zone in 2024/25.

Nottingham Forest’s transfer business this summer

Forest are no stranger to a transfer or two, making over 30 new additions to the squad since promotion back to the Premier League back in the 2021/22 season.

Nuno has wasted no time in further adding to his squad this summer, signing the likes of goalkeeper Carlos Miguel, young winger Eric da Silva Moreira and Newcastle star Elliot Anderson, with the latter costing £35m with Odysseas Vlachodimos going in the other direction.

Elliot Anderson for Newcastle

However, to avoid another PSR breach this season, the club have had to balance the books by parting ways with two important squad members.

Orel Mangala and Moussa Niakhate both left the City Ground to join French side Lyon, with the pair leaving the club for £20m and £27m respectively.

Whilst they’ve undoubtedly left a hole in Nuno’s squad, the club’s recent recruitment has provided hope that they can identify a suitable replacement to further improve the Reds squad.

Their excellent recruitment can be demonstrated by multiple players within the Forest first-team, including one talent who’s already proven to be value for money, with his market value taking a huge increase as a result.

Callum Hudson-Odoi’s market value in 2024

After arriving at the club from Chelsea during the summer of 2023, winger Callum Hudson-Odoi looked as though he would be a shrewd addition to the club after joining the Reds for a deal in the region of £3m last summer.

He made an instant impact on his first appearance for the Reds, scoring a goal-of-the-season contender against Vincent Kompany's Burnley side to secure a vital point for his new team.

However, fast forward to nearly a year on from his move to Trentside, he’s excelled in his first campaign in the East Midlands, scoring eight and providing one assist in his 29 outings for the club.

His form has seen strong interest from fellow Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, with the Reds valuing Hudson-Odoi at £40m – an increase of 1,230% from the fee they paid for him less than 12 months ago.

He’s been an excellent addition to the club, becoming a crucial player under Nuno towards the tail end of the campaign – scoring three goals in the final three matches of the season.

Next season provides a fresh opportunity for the 23-year-old to build on the progress he’s made in recent months, potentially seeing his market value increase further.

Justin Langer full of 'respect' for Virat Kohli's decision to take paternity leave

“Never ever miss the birth of your children, because it is one of the great things you will ever do”

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Nov-2020

‘I cannot believe he displays the energy he does in everything he does’ – Justin Langer on Virat Kohli•Getty Images

“Of course it will have an impact,” Australia coach Justin Langer said when asked about Virat Kohli returning home after the first Test in Australia later this year for the birth of his first child. Using an Aussie Rules Football parallel, Langer likened Kohli’s absence to “taking Dustin Martin out of Richmond”, but stressed that even without their captain, India “are a very, very good team” and “we have to be on our toes all summer”.”Are we happy he is not playing? It’s like taking (AFL star) Dustin Martin out of Richmond,” Langer said with a laugh at a press interaction earlier today. “Of course it will have an impact, but we also know that India beat us last time (in 2018-19). They are a very, very good team. We cannot get complacent for a second with or without Virat.”So we are going to have to be on our toes all summer, and we’re looking forward to that.”Kohli and his wife Anushka Sharma are expecting their first child around the turn of the year, and Kohli has asked for – and been granted – paternity leave. The tour will start with three ODIs, followed by three T20Is, with the four-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy played at the end. In a media statement earlier this week, the BCCI confirmed Kohli’s return after the first Test, which will be India’s first day-night Test overseas, but did not specify whether Kohli would rejoin the Indian Test squad at a later stage, though any return would have to negotiate strict quarantine protocols, adding to the time that he would not be available. As far as Langer was concerned, though, taking time off for “one of the great things you will ever do” was worth the sacrifice on Kohli’s part.”Virat Kohli is probably the best player I have ever seen in my life for so many reasons, not only his batting but his energy and passion for the game, the way he fields. I cannot believe he displays the energy he does in everything he does, and I’ve got so much respect for him,” Langer said. “I’ve also got respect for him in the sense that he’s made this decision (to take paternity leave).”He’s a human being like all of us. It’s the same with Kane Richardson. He sacrificed the IPL so that he could be at the birth of his son a couple of days ago. So if I was giving advice to any of my players, I would always say never ever miss the birth of your children, because it is one of the great things you will ever do. Virat’s a human being, and I respect his decision.”The Indian contingent – without Rohit Sharma and Ishant Sharma, who are both carrying injuries – reached Sydney from the UAE on Thursday, and have gone into two weeks’ quarantine straightaway.
