Makhaya Ntini, the South Africa fast bowler, has announced his retirement from international cricket but will continue representing domestic sides. Ntini will be given a farewell during the Twenty20 international between South Africa and India at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on January 9, when he will make his final appearance for South Africa. An emotional Ntini, fighting back tears, announced his decision at a press conference in Johannesburg on Tuesday. He reflected on his journey from being the first black African cricketer to play for South Africa in 1998 to becoming one of the nation’s premier bowlers.”It has been a wonderful journey for me to represent my country,” Ntini said at his retirement press conference in Johannesburg. “I have so many great memories, which I will carry with me for the rest of my life. My career is by no means over; it just means that internationally my time has come to hang up my boots. Domestic cricket is thriving at the moment, and I want to be a part of the set up, as a player, for as long as possible.”Ntini said he made his decision “two months ago” but only announced it on Tuesday because he has been in meetings with Cricket South Africa over his future. “I was in Port Elizabeth and thought it’s time to call it a day. I can’t keep waiting to end something when I don’t know when it’s going to end. I didn’t want to be pushed out of the game.”His international career spanned 13 years and he was the first black African player to represent the country, four years after democracy. It was the completion of a journey that began when, as a 14-year-old boy who could barely speak English, Ntini was given a scholarship to Dale College. The prestigious Eastern Cape school had deep cricketing roots and was where Ntini honedhis skills and made a name for himself. Seven years later, he was picked for South Africa, achieving what many thought was impossible.”Nobody ever thought that we as black people would be able to compete, but I’ve done that. I’ve conquered and I’ve been through all the cricketing countries. I left footprints, I did everything that I needed to do to show that we as black people can manage, we can do everything.”He has never shied away from being the black face of South African cricket and acting as a role model to black youth. Ntini said in his time with the national team “all the coaches and the three captains, the late Hansie Cronje, Shaun Pollock, Graeme Smith showed me that it’s not about your colour, it’s about what you can do.”Ntini always maintained the combination of coming from a rural, poor background and his race meant that he had to work harder than anyone else. “I knew that challenges that would come in the years to come and I was prepared for it. I tied my laces, I ran every day because I wanted to achieve what no one else could,” said Ntini. The hours spent practicing could all have amounted to nought when Ntini was convicted of rape two years after making his debut. He reflected on that time as the worst in his life. “I thought I would never play again. The worst badge you could put on anyone is that of a rapist.” The then United Cricket Board assisted Ntini in his appeal and he was subsequently acquitted but he still had a tainted reputation that took time to mend. “Some of the people of this country believed that if you are mentioned in that way (as a rapist), you’d done it, and to win all of them back was hard.”Despite the difficulty, he managed to do just that. In 2005 and 2007, Ntini was voted South Africa’s most popular sportsman of the year in the BMI Adult SportTrack Report . By then, he had also become the first South African to take 10 wickets at Lords and had claimed the best return by a South African bowler in a Test match, with 13 wickets for 132 runs against the West Indies in Trinidad.”Taking Test wickets was the most important thing that happened to me in my life,” said Ntini, who quickly added that he has no regrets about retiring before reaching the magical 400-wicket mark. “It’s just one of those things that happens.” Ntini retired with 390 wickets from 101 tests at an average of 28.82.His love of cricket has not dimmed and he is committed to playing for the Warriors for “as long as they will have me.” He also plans to spend his part of retirement working at his academy in Mdantsane, near East London. The academy will focus on players between the ages of seven and 24 and will seek to assist players of colour. “I am sick and tired identifying a child and putting him in an academy and six months later, we don’t see him again. We need to make sure we protect the new generations of cricketers,” said Ntini.Although the academy is an independent project, Ntini is in talks with Cricket South Africa (CSA) to assimilate with their development programmes. He will also be acting as a CSA ambassador. Gerald Majola, chief executive officer of CSA said that helping Ntini cope post-retirement is part of an initiative by the body so that “Makhaya can have a career after cricket.” Majola said CSA aims to assist former players in accordance with their “calibre and level of skills.”Ntini ‘s effervescent personality makes him an ideal representative for CSA and will also ensure that he can keep to his promise of “making sure cricket in this country does not die.” Most of all, he wants to remembered as a uniter. “Makhaya is not just a name, or a person, its energy, dedication, pride, all of us together. It’s Ubuntu.” The word originates from African traditions and focuses on communities. Its meaning, ‘I am because we are,’ captures how Ntini flew the flag for the black majority in South African cricket.

Jones: Everton must make Burnley rue defeat

Adam Jones has claimed that Everton must now make Burnley ‘regret’ their 2-0 loss at Norwich City in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

The Lowdown: Great results for Everton

After the Merseyside club beat Manchester United 1-0 at Goodison Park in the Saturday lunchtime kick-off, other results at the bottom of the table also went their way over the weekend.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-4/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Watford lost 3-0 at home to Leeds United on Saturday afternoon, while Burnley then went and lost to Norwich. It means that Frank Lampard’s team are now four points clear of the relegation zone with just eight matches left to play.

The Latest: Jones reacts to Premier League results

Taking to Twitter, Liverpool Echo journalist Jones has now given his reaction to the results, claiming that the Clarets dropping off after beating Everton 3-2 in midweek was a ‘real let off’ for Frank Lampard’s side.

He chimed: “Well that is quite the weekend of results for Everton. In some ways, it’s a real let off.

“Burnley really dropped the ball after what seemed like a defining victory in midweek. Everton need to make them absolutely regret that over their next few games, whatever it takes.”

The Verdict: Not over yet

The race to secure Premier League safety is certainly not over yet, but of course the weekend’s results provide a huge step in the right direction for the Toffees.

Some of their next few fixtures look particularly daunting, with a trip to Liverpool in the Merseyside derby followed by a home match against Chelsea to come.

There could be plenty of twists and turns along the way, but Lampard will be hoping that Everton’s win against the Red Devils can install some much-needed confidence in his team, ready for the rollercoaster ahead.

Bangladesh must maintain self belief – Bashar

Former Bangladesh captain Habibul Bashar has said the team needs to maintain a level of enthusiasm even if the results don’t always go their way. With the World Cup early next year, Bashar felt it was important for the team to build self belief in the coming months, and that could translate into better results. He added it was a good decision by Shakib Al Hasan to give up the captaincy when he was struggling for form on the tour of England.”I think the level of satisfaction should go up,” Bashar told the . “People always talk about too much expectation, which I think is not a good thing but if there’s no expectation, it does no good to the team. It is time we shed the habit of being happy when we are ‘playing well’. You must have some belief if you are looking for the right results.”Bangladesh recently recorded their first ever win against England, in Bristol, but they failed to convert it to a rare away series win when they lost the deciding ODI by 144 runs at Edgbaston.”I am not saying the win (against England) was insignificant,” Bashar said. “It is a huge achievement to win against England in their home conditions.”Bashar also threw his weight behind the struggling batsman Mohammad Ashraful, who for a long time hasn’t repaid the faith shown by the selectors.”You cannot question [Mohammad] Ashraful’s quality and I’m confident that Ash will make his comeback in the World Cup, but now he’s badly out of form,” Bashar said. “I think he needs a break to do well in the coming months. That will make sure of his return to form as far as I’m concerned.”Mashrafe Mortaza regained the captaincy after regular captain Shakib struggled to combine the roles of leading allrounder and leader. Mortaza only recently returned from a long-term knee injury, and he was the automatic choice to take over from Shakib. Bashar, however, felt Shakib would do better when given a second chance.”Shakib must feel better now that Mashrafe has the captaincy,” Bashar said. “I think it was too much pressure on him. I always felt that he was made captain too soon for his age. He can be the country’s best captain, but only in the future.”Bashar doesn’t expect wholesale changes to the squad for the World Cup, and felt it would be worth investing in the current group. “I see very little chance of that happening because in the past two years, player production hasn’t been too good and backups are not in place. We have a few options but I still think this current team is good enough and talented enough to produce the goods in the World Cup.”

Newcastle transfer news on Simon

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s (KSA) Public Investment Fund (PIF) are reportedly now in talks to sign Moses Simon for Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: Showcasing his talent

Simon recently showcased what he is all about at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) with Nigeria, with the country’s media describing him as the ‘star’ of their team, as he bagged a goal and assist in the tournament.

At club level, he plays for Ligue 1 side Nantes, and has scored twice and made a further six assists in the division so far this season.

In a recent interview, Belgian defender Jules Van Cleemput claimed that Simon has made him suffer the most out of any player in a game, describing him as ‘fast’ and a ‘real nightmare’ (RTBF via Pulse Sports).

The Latest: Offer made

As per Own Goal Nigeria, the St. James’ Park faithful have now made Simon their ‘prime target’ for the summer transfer window, and he will cost in the region of £20m.

They are currently ‘locked in talks’ with Nantes over a potential deal, who are ‘open’ to letting him leave after blocking a move to Leeds United in January.

The North East club have already offered him a salary of £100,000-per-week, which has put them in the ‘driving seat’ to sign the winger, and PIF have apparently been on his trail ‘for a while’.

They tried but failed to sign him for Saudi club Al Nassr, and want to move again to sign him this summer, this time for the Tyneside outfit.

The Verdict: Get it done

With a total of 61 goals and 51 assists for club and country combined over the course of his career so far, Simon would add another threat to the Magpies’ attack with his pace and trickery, and could combine well with fellow wide man Allan Saint-Maximin.

He is at a good age at 26, and the numbers quoted should not hurt PIF’s pockets too much.

Nonetheless, so long as they can avoid relegation from the Premier League, Simon is a player that can very quickly become another fan favourite for the Toon Army.

Liverpool fans delighted with injury latest

A number of Liverpool supporters are delighted after Jurgen Klopp said Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could be fit to face Crystal Palace this weekend.

The Reds made it into the Carabao Cup final on Thursday night, coasting to an impressive 2-0 victory away to Arsenal.

Diogo Jota was Liverpool’s hero at the Emirates, scoring both of his side’s goals as he stepped up in the absence of key duo Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

Someone who was unavailable for the game was Oxlade-Chamberlain, however, who missed out on taking on his former club because of an injury sustained against Brentford last weekend.

Speaking in his pre-Crystal Palace press conference on Friday [via journalist James Pearce on Twitter], Klopp said the midfielder was back in training, meaning he could be available for the weekend trip to Selhurst Park.

Celtic: Hoops poised to sign Johnny Kenny

Celtic are ‘days’ away from completing the signing of striker Johnny Kenny from Sligo Rovers, according to The Sligo Champion (via The Irish Independent).

The lowdown: Celtic busy

Celtic have already made three signings this month, recruiting Daizen Maeda, Yosuke Ideguchi and Reo Hatate from the J1 League.

Kenny, who’s scored three goals in as many appearances for the Republic of Ireland at Under-19 level, looks set to be the fourth.

The 18-year-old frontman has caught the eye after bagging 12 goals in his 34 senior outings for Rovers.

There could also be outgoings at Parkhead in a busy January window, with Vasilis Barkas and Conor Hazard some of those expected to depart.

The latest: Hoops win the race

According to the report, Celtic look to have won the battle with Scottish Premiership rivals Hibernian for Kenny’s signature.

Hibs made a ‘huge’ effort to land Kenny, inviting him to a game at Easter Road last month.

But he appears to have opted for Celtic, who will duly pay his €150,000 release clause as well as add-ons.

The verdict: Exciting long-term addition

Kenny may be part of the reserve set-up initially. He’s still very young, and the step-up in quality is considerable – the Scottish Premiership is the ninth-best league in Europe, while the top flight in Ireland ranks 40th, so it’s hard to envisage the teenager making the immediate step up into Ange Postecoglou’s senior options.

Celtic fans, then, may need to show patience – he’s not being signed to make an immediate impact like the J1 League trio – but the club are clearly convinced of his potential having raced in front of Hibs to secure a deal.

Indeed, there’s apparently been ‘massive interest’ in Kenny ever since last season, when he made his first-team debut for Rovers, so perhaps the Hoops’ recruitment team are onto a winner in the long run.

In other news, Celtic apparently want this deal ‘wrapped up’.
