Journalist hints striker likened to Harry Kane could now join Tottenham

Tottenham have been named as a credible landing spot for one club's "underrated" striker who's even been likened to their record goalscorer Harry Kane.

Postecoglou lacks out and out number nine at Spurs

Apart from Richarlison, who's recently started to turn a corner at Spurs, manager Ange Postecoglou is arguably bereft of natural centre-forward options.

ByEmilio Galantini Jan 16, 2024

This hasn't deterred Tottenham's chase for Champions League qualification for the most part, as captain Son Heung-min has often thrived in the role this season. When the South Korea star isn't taking up Kane's former mantle, Richarlison is put there, with the Brazilian now showcasing his best form since joining Spurs from Everton in 2022.

Tottenham forward Richarlison.

Richarlison boasts six goals in his last seven top-flight appearances for the Lilywhites, and Postecoglou will be absolutely thrilled by his striker's real turnaround lately.

Nevertheless, there have still been recent suggestions that Tottenham could move to sign a striker this year. While Postecoglou has coped extremely well in his first season without club legend Kane, a few injuries up top would put them in a more precarious position.

Young striker Alejo Veliz is also out for months after picking up a knee injury in their 3-1 win over Bournemouth earlier this month, so the South American isn't even an option they can turn to. Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke is on Tottenham's radar among other names, like Brentford forward Ivan Toney.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

The England international has been linked with a move to north London, whether it be with Spurs or Arsenal, who are billed as the major contenders for Toney's signature.

Tottenham named as credible destination for Toney

While they're thought to be underdogs in the race, journalist Ryan Taylor has refused to discount Spurs and names them as a credible destination. Indeed, the journalist suggests Toney could still end up joining Tottenham in 2024, when speaking on The Spurs Chat Podcast this week.

“I have always understood that Spurs are a team that have been looking at Toney," said Taylor.

"I don’t know if they have the muscle to compete with Chelsea and Arsenal at the end of the season. People have shot down Spurs’ interest in Toney, whereas the information I’ve had is don’t rule out Spurs."

The 27-year-old was a star player for Brentford last season, scoring 20 league goals, and he is now eligible to return from his ban for alleged gambling breaches in their next game.

Called "underrated" by sections of the press (Dean Jones), Arsenal captain Declan Rice has also likened him to Kane for his playmaking ability.

"He's kind of like Harry Kane in a way where he's not only an out-and-out striker, he's a playmaker as well – his left and right footed passing, the way he picks out his teammates is a special technique to have," said Rice to talkSPORT.

Martin must unleash “ridiculous” Southampton gem alongside Alcaraz

Southampton extended their unbeaten run in the Championship to 14 games after resoundingly beating Blackburn Rovers 4-0 last weekend, Jon Dahl Tomasson's Riversiders second best all afternoon at St Mary's as Russell Martin's men showed no mercy in a rampant display.

Martin's use of the substitutes bench came in clutch in this contest, with Sekou Mara and Carlos Alcaraz both scoring after being introduced into the game late on to ensure the three points were secure to avoid any worries of a slip-up.

Those late strikes in the one-sided match on the South Coast could see both players come into the starting eleven today, Carlos Alcaraz itching to add more goals to his Saints resume if selected for today's contest against a frail QPR defence.

Carlos Alcaraz's game vs Blackburn in numbers

Alcaraz only needed 14 minutes on the pitch against Dahl Tomasson's Rovers to add another goal to his growing Southampton account, up to seven goals now for the Championship club since joining in January of this year from his native Argentina.

He could have a double on another day in a blistering cameo off the bench, awkwardly missing a penalty with a dinked effort from the spot before firing in his side's fourth of the game deep into injury time at the end of the 90 minutes.

The Saints' number 22 even held his hands up to the St Mary's masses to apologise for the poor penalty miss after scoring, more than atoning for that error with the strike.

Successful with three out of four dribble attempts too from such a short spell on the pitch, Alcaraz was a handful from the minute he came on and was an impactful presence to bring on late into the game to overwhelm a tiring Blackburn defence.

Martin could well be tempted to start his livewire Argentinian attacker next match as a result, with Sekou Mara also clamouring for a starting opportunity against QPR after an equally impactful cameo off the bench.

Sekou Mara's game vs Blackburn in numbers

Mara was introduced into the contest in place of a surprisingly below-par Adam Armstrong, showing the usually clinical attacker how to find the back of the net in this one on a rare goalless afternoon for the ex-Newcastle United striker.

The 21-year-old crucially prodded home after Ryan Fraser crossed into the danger area, the young Frenchman putting the game beyond all doubt as a result.

Mara's trickery on the ball would also win the Saints a penalty before this game-clinching goal, twisting and turning Blackburn shirts whilst eyeing up an effort on the Rovers net before being stopped in his tracks by a rash tackle.

Coming off the pitch at the end overjoyed at his short but sweet 14-minute cameo on the St Mary's turf, Mara also failed to misplace a single ball in the game with two of his three ground duels also successfully won.

Mara has shone in a Saints kit in the past away from just this second-tier season in isolation, even receiving praise for his individual displays during their relegation campaign from the Premier League.

The Frenchman was hailed as "ridiculous" by football pundit and ex-Manchester City player Micah Richards in the aftermath of assisting Kyle Walker-Peters last season versus Leeds United on Match of the Day, showboating on the ball before cutting the Whites defence open with an inch-perfect pass through in the 2-2 draw.

The skilful attacker will hope his promising cameo against Blackburn will be enough to be rewarded with only his second start of the season today, even unsettling the status quo on the South Coast with Adam Armstrong potentially dropped to make way for the Saints' number 18 to further strut his stuff.

Marco Silva’s side have struggled to find the back of the net and are the joint-lowest scorers with Burnley ahead of the clash with Wolves, so it’s clear that the manager will have to enter the market to find some prolific reinforcements should he want to change his fortunes in the final third.

The Portuguese boss has set his sights on Ajax centre-forward Chuba Akpom, who only put pen to paper over the summer from Championship side Middlesbrough, and it’s fair to say that he’s made an impressive start to his new life at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

England’s former youth international has firmly established himself as John Van’t Schip’s best-performing offensive player so far this season in the Eredivisie (WhoScored – Ajax statistics), and the 28-year-old’s impressive form has caught the eye of the hierarchy at Craven Cottage ahead of January.

Fulham showing interest in Chuba Akpom

According to TEAMtalk, Akpom is of interest to Fulham, alongside several other clubs who are also looking to secure his services at the start of next year.

Crystal Palace and Fulham are amongst the clubs who have enquired about the availability of Ajax striker Chuba Akpom, TEAMtalk can reveal.

"Sources have now told TEAMtalk that Akpom is open to the idea of a move to the Premier League and with Ajax ready to consider a loan deal, there is interest.

"Crystal Palace and Fulham are both very keen on a possible deal for the 28-year-old, while Everton, Burnley, Luton Town and Sheffield United are also keeping tabs on the situation.”

Ajax striker Chuba Akpom.

Akpom could be a "remarkable" addition

During his time at Ajax, Akpom has so far scored five goals from 13 matches in total which shows how prolific he can be in the final third, but he’s capable of operating everywhere across the frontline and even as an attacking midfielder (Transfermarkt – Akpom statistics).

Sponsored by Nike, Schip’s talisman was named the 2022/23 Player of the Season in the Championship, so the fact that he’s received individual recognition for his performances in England shows that he’s capable of reaching the high standards required to succeed.

According to BBC reporter Oluwashina Okeleji, Akpom is a “remarkable” striker, and when you consider that he shares the same representative, Elite Project Group Ltd, as Alex Iwobi (Fulham agents), this existing connection that his management have to the club could give the board a small advantage should they try to get a deal over the line.

The Bavarians progressed to the semi-finals of the competition thanks to Joshua Kimmich's second-half header at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night. Thomas Tuchel's side won 3-2 on aggregate, with Kane, who scored a penalty in the first leg, cutting an overjoyed figure at the full-time whistle.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT HARRY KANE SAID

The England captain and former Spurs man, who has scored 15 goals in 21 games against Arsenal, told :"Yeah an unbelievable win. It's been a tough season for us. We've had to fight and grind it out at times. We knew we could make the difference with our fans at home. It was a tough game, a tight game. It was a great goal from Josh [Kimmich]. To reach the semi-finals is a great achievement for us and we can enjoy it.
"I think in these types of games the first half is always a bit cagey. We said at half-time we wanted to up the tempo, be aggressive. We had a couple off the post and could have made it easier for ourselves but these games are always tough and you just have to get through them.
"The expectation here is to try and win the Champions League. We won the league for 11 years in a row so maybe there was a bit of tempo missing. That can't happen. Now we have to enjoy the Champions League and try to get ready for Saturday."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

After losing their Bundesliga crown to Bayer Leverkusen at the weekend, Bayern have a chance to salvage their season as they will now face Real Madrid in the semi-finals of the competition. And Kane, who has scored 39 goals this season, is likely to be a big part of whether they pick up some silverware or not.

Journalist says "West Ham are going to struggle" after Bowen injury latest

West Ham could be set for a real struggle without star winger Jarrod Bowen after news on his injury, says journalist Paul Brown.

Moyes loses Bowen to injury

The England winger returned home from international duty early last week after picking up a knee injury with Gareth Southgate's side.

Bowen, who has starred under manager David Moyes this season, even playing more centrally at points as a makeshift Michail Antonio alternative, is a sore miss on the field.

West Ham could sell "wonderful" talent in "surprise" January transfer move

He’s attracting great interest from abroad.

ByEmilio Galantini Nov 28, 2023

West Ham just about scraped past struggling Burnley at Turf Moor last weekend, with dramatic late goals from Dara O'Shea (OG) and Tomas Soucek sealing all three points in Lancashire.

The Hammers arguably lacked a cutting edge at points. Striker Antonio was also absent following his injury, forcing Moyes to start the out-of-favour Danny Ings up front before he opted to bring on promising young forward Divin Mubama.

West Ham United manager David Moyes.

Bowen could've been a viable option to lead the line place of both Mubama and Ings, but his knee injury ultimately forced him to sit out in a blow for Moyes.

West Ham's boss, sharing an update on Bowen in his pre-match press conference before Backa Topola, said the 26-year-old is still unavailable through injury and hasn't travelled to Serbia. Moyes said (via The Standard):

"Jarrod hasn't travelled and we have another couple who have some illness who haven't travelled, but I am not prepared to say who they are."

West Ham "will struggle" without Bowen

Bowen has racked up eight goals and one assist in just 12 Premier League starts this season, with the former Hull City star really proving his worth after being awarded a new long-term contract recently.

Journalist Brown, speaking to GiveMeSport this week, claimed that West Ham will struggle without Bowen and his presence going forward – calling the player's absence a "big deal" for Moyes.

gideon-kidoa-jarrod-bowen-west-ham-opinion

"Yeah, I think Jarrod Bowen has already proved just how important he is to West Ham," said the reporter.

"West Ham are going to struggle to be as creative without him. He's a good finisher. He advances the ball up the pitch, his movement causes teams problems, and losing him is a big deal for West Ham. They lose a lot of cutting edge without him and they don't really have a whole lot of options in forward areas which makes his absence even harder to bear.

"I just think Bowen is a really good player who deserves all the plaudits he gets. He's moved up a division and thrived under David Moyes and he's becoming one of the best forwards in the Premier League. So I think any team would miss him when he's out."

The attacker is a vital piece of the West Ham jigsaw and Moyes will want him back as soon as possible, especially considering the pressure surrounding his position right now.

"World-class" Liverpool hero now linked with shock move to European giants

A "world-class" Liverpool superstar has been linked with a shock move away from Anfield in the near future, with a fresh claim suggesting as much.

Big Liverpool players could leave

The Reds have gone into the final international break full of confidence, with Sunday's 3-0 win at home to Brentford seeing them jump into second place in the Premier League table. There is only one point separating Jurgen Klopp's side and leaders Manchester City, ahead of what is a monumental clash at the Etihad on November 25th, with an exciting title race in prospect.

So far this season, many of Liverpool's most high-profile players have stood tall and performed superbly, whether it be Alisson in goal, captain Virgil van Dijk at the back, or Mohamed Salah further forward. Salah has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, however, after a £150m bid from Al-Ittihad was rejected in the summer transfer window, while Thiago is another big name who could leave the Reds, with Inter Milan keen on signing him in 2024.

Now, a new transfer report suggests that another of Liverpool's star figures could be of interest, in what represents a concerning update.

Trent Alexander-Arnold transfer update

According to a report from Spain, Real Madrid are eyeing a big-money move for Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold, seeing him as a great option to bring in as Dani Carvajal's successor at right-back.

ryan-kent-trent-alexander-arnold-liverpool-opinion

The La Liga giants are willing to pay more than €80m (£70m) for the services of the 25-year-old, and while manager Carlo Ancelotti could leave at the end of the season, he would still help get a deal over the line for the Reds ace.

Madrid appear to be building another special team of world-renowned players, with Jude Bellingham coming in and Kylian Mbappe potentially arriving next year, and it looks as though Alexander-Arnold is the player they have earmarked for that right-back spot.

While clearly a worrying update from a Liverpool perspective, their brilliant homegrown star may not want to leave his boyhood club at this point, and the Reds should be demanding far more for his services than £70m. Alexander-Arnold is one of the most gifted players to have ever emerged from the Merseysiders' academy, and he has grown into a genuinely elite player, producing levels of creativity from right-back that few have produced from that position in history.

In fact, Alexander-Arnold's numbers throughout his career sum up just how special he is, not to mention winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and EFL Cup, among other trophies.

Former Reds midfielder Lucas Leiva has described him as "world-class", such is his ability, and the fact that he is still only 25 years of age means that he has a big chunk of his career ahead of him. Alexander-Arnold is simply too special a talent to let go at the peak of his powers, and while some of his defensive work could possibly still be improved, this is someone who may well be a key man for another decade, quite possibly taking over the captaincy from Van Dijk one day.

As bad as Vicario: Spurs dud who lost the ball 23 times must be dropped

Tottenham Hotspur’s inconsistent form came back to bite them on Sunday afternoon.

Despite going into their Premier League game away to Nottingham Forest off the back of a draw away to Newcastle United and a win at home to Brentford, Thomas Frank’s side looked second-best from the first minute to the last.

The North Londoners were unable to keep the hosts at bay, unable to create decent chances for themselves and generally looked bereft of ideas.

There were poor performers wherever you looked for Spurs, but two really stood out, one of which was Guglielmo Vicario.

Vicario's poor performance vs Forest

Vicario is a particularly frustrating goalkeeper: in one game, he can look like one of the best in the league, pulling off sensational saves, and the next game, he can look like one of the worst.

Unfortunately for Frank and Co, Sunday’s match against Forest most certainly fell into the latter category.

For example, while he is not entirely blameless for the first goal, most of the blame for the hosts’ second should fall at his feet.

If the Italian were better positioned for Callum Hudson-Odoi’s audacious effort, then it would have been a relatively straightforward stop, and the Lilywhites would’ve still been in the game.

Unfortunately, the former Empoli man got it all wrong, and while he made some saves after the fact, it was too little too late.

It wasn’t just his shot-stopping that was poor either, as in 96 minutes of action, the 29-year-old completed just 21 of 31 passes, was accurate in just three of his 12 attempted long balls and managed to lose the ball ten times despite taking just 39 touches.

In all, it was a truly terrible showing from Vicario, but while the media are mainly focusing on him, one of his teammates was arguably just as bad.

The Spurs dud who was as bad as Vicario

The bad news for Frank and Spurs fans is that you could realistically make the case for any number of players being the worst on Sunday, from Richalison to Mohammed Kudus and even Micky Van de Ven.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, when it comes to the outfield player who was as disappointing and as detrimental to the side as Vicario, it is impossible to look past Pedro Porro.

The Spanish full-back is enormously talented, and at his best can be far more of an attacking outlet than most others in his position.

Unfortunately, he’s not been anywhere near his best for some time, and was arguably at his worst on Sunday.

The former Sporting CP was entirely ineffective in attack, a massive liability in defence and, unsurprisingly, the watching press were not impressed with what they saw.

For example, the Standard’s Matt Verri awarded the full-back a 2/10 match rating, writing that he was ‘shocking defensively’ and that he ‘frustrated throughout.’

This may all sound a little hypobolic, or unfair, but the 26-year-old’s statistics prove otherwise.

In his 96 minutes on the pitch, the Spaniard produced an expected assists figure of just 0.04, lost four of his six ground duels, committed two fouls, failed to play a key pass, failed in 100% of his dribbles and took 81 touches, but lost the ball 23 times.

Ultimately, Sunday was a terrible day at the office for the entire Spurs’ squad, but Vicario and Porro were particularly poor, and Frank should really be looking to drop them.
