Cornwall, Da Silva stretch West Indies' lead after Lakmal five-for

West Indies recover from 171 for 7 to open up a potentially match-winning lead

Andrew Fidel Fernando22-Mar-2021Stumps
Until Rahkeem Cornwall joined Joshua Da Silva at the crease, Sri Lanka were in the game, with serious hopes of restricting West Indies to a lead of less than fifty. Suranga Lakmal had already claimed a five-wicket haul, all the specialist batsmen had been dismissed, and the second new ball was around the corner, with West Indies leading by just two runs. But Cornwall, intent on proving he is a better batsman than his Test stats suggested, began to free his arms midway through the third session, hitting thumping blows down the ground, cracking seamers on the up, pulling ferociously, cutting on occasion, and generally imposing himself on the match in a manner that no batsmen had previously managed on this pitch. By day’s end, he was not out on 60 off 79 balls – 48 of those runs having come from boundaries (nine fours, two sixes). His 90-run eighth-wicket stand with Da Silva, who contributed only 29 to the partnership, broke the match open for the West Indies. Where before Cornwall’s arrival it seemed as if the teams were in for a second-innings scrap, West Indies had achieved a commanding position by stumps – a triple-figure lead almost in hand. Cornwall had Kemar Roach for company at stumps, the team score at 268 for 8.Sri Lanka’s bowlers will feel, however, that the final scoreline on day two does not reflect their discipline, which had kept West Indies under significant pressure for the majority of the day. Lakmal was both the most potent and most persistent of Sri Lanka’s operators, as he often is on foreign tours, and ended the day on 5 for 45 from 24 overs. Dushmantha Chameera bowled aggressively at times, and took 2 for 71, though thanks to his pace he was also the most hittable of Sri Lanka’s frontliners. On a surface that offered only slow turn, Lasith Embuldeniya took 1 for 64, and kept an end tied while seamers attacked from the other.Cornwall was somewhat watchful early on, playing out 15 deliveries before venturing a boundary, but when he arrived, he came like a storm. He smoked Suranga Lakmal past mid-off to collect his first four, before several overs later, he bludgeoned Vishwa Fernando to and over the deep midwicket boundary within the space of three balls. Sri Lanka had taken the second new ball by this stage, but that only made it disappear faster off Cornwall’s blade. He rarely missed the chance to capitalise on errors on length, and although the feature of this innings was his boundary-hitting, Cornwall was not averse to working the singles on occasion. He reached his maiden half-century off the 62nd ball he faced. Da Silva largely ticked along sedately at the other end. Before Cornwall hijacked the narrative, though, it had been Lakmal’s day. He bowled a maiden first up, and then first ball of the second over, drew Kraigg Brathwaite into a loose shot outside off stump, the ball flying to second slip. The rest of his morning session was quiet, but he came in strong after lunch, bowling Jermaine Blackwood with his first ball of the session – a full, straight delivery that the batsman played all around. Several overs later, Lakmal also had Kyle Mayers (who had struck an effervescent 45) caught in the slips. The two wickets to complete the five-for came after tea, as he bowled Jason Holder off an inside edge, before having Alzarri Joseph caught at point. This was his fourth five-wicket haul, the other three also having come away from home. Before Cornwall, West Indies largely tiptoed their way through the day, respecting bowling that was frequently – almost uniformly – tight. John Campbell toiled his way to 42 off 132, forging a 56-run partnership with Nkrumah Bonner, who made 31. They were each dismissed either side of the lunch break, before Mayers injected some energy into the West Indies innings with his 45 off 70.Mayers’ innings was a little streaky – he edged his fourth ball past slip – but his aggression was calculated, and it shook West Indies out of the torpor that was threatening to overcome their innings at the time. Mayers hooked a Dushmantha Chameera bouncer for six over deep square leg against the wind, in the 43rd over, and would hit another six soon after, launching Dhananjaya de Silva’s offspin over the sightscreen. He looked set to make West Indies’ first half-century of the innings until Lakmal angled one in from wide of the stumps, bowling over the wicket, and got him to edge to second slip.Mayers had got West Indies to within 40 runs of the lead, but it was Cornwall who rode West Indies into their excellent position. Sri Lanka’s main hope now is that Cornwall’s innings is an indication that the pitch has become much better to bat on.

Chelsea chiefs have spoken about signing "tough" £50 million rival striker

Chelsea chiefs have internally discussed the possibility of doing a deal for one £50 million striker from a rival club, as Todd Boehly and co consider further attacking options for new head coach Enzo Maresca.

Stewart and Winstanley identify striker targets for Chelsea

As widely reported, Chelsea's summer plans are being spearheaded by co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, with the two transfer chiefs already well underway in their efforts to back Maresca.

Indeed, Chelsea have spent around £93 million on the signings of Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Guiu, Omari Kellyman, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Brazilian starlet Estevao Willian and latest addition Renato Veiga from FC Basel.

Veiga completed his medical on Wednesday and has signed all the necessary documentation, according to reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, and can now be considered a new Chelsea player.

Stewart and Winstanley have registered a net spend of just £4 million – thanks to the sales of Ian Maatsen, Lewis Hall, Michael Golding and Omari Hutchinson – who brought in a total of around £89 million.

Chelsea still have money to spend as a result, and it is believed they are keen on bringing an alternative striking option to Nicolas Jackson. The Senegal international actually scored 17 goals in all competitions last season, finishing 2023/2024 as Chelsea's second top scorer, but Maresca has apparently made clear he wants a striker who can compete with Jackson.

Boehly has had a bid rejected for Atletico Madrid starlet Samu Omorodion, as the Blues seek to sign a forward, and it is believed Chelsea maintain a serious interest in Napoli star Victor Osimhen – but a deal will depend on whether president Aurelio De Laurentiis lowers his demands for the Nigerian.

Chelsea have held internal talks over a move for Ivan Toney as well, but the England international isn't the only Premier League striker who the club have pondered a move for. Newcastle United star Alexander Isak was subject to an approach from Chelsea recently, as backed by reliable sources like Sky Sports' Keith Downie.

Chelsea hold behind-the-scenes conversations over Rodrigo Muniz move

Speaking on the London is Blue podcast, via TBR, journalist Ben Jacobs claims the west Londoners hold an interest in rival striker Rodrigo Muniz at Fulham.

Chelsea have apparently spoken internally about signing Muniz this summer, coming after the Brazilian's late-season purple patch, where he scored nine goals in 13 league games between early February to late April.

Muniz, who is rumoured to command a price tag of around £50 million, kept Chelsea loanee Armando Broja out of the Fulham side with a series of scintillating displays last term – which also attracted praise from Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer.

"He really was a handful. Tough to play against, horrible to play against in fact," said Shearer after Muniz's performance against Bournemouth in February.

"That's always a good thing for a centre-forward, that's what you have to be. He was strong, he ran the channels, he brought players into the game and he really upset the Bournemouth defenders in every way, in everything he was doing. He was willing to run in behind and on one of the occasions he does it, they get their first goal because of it."

Tamim Iqbal to undergo tests after falling ill during Bangabandhu T20 Cup

“I was feeling very weak,” Iqbal posted on his official Facebook page

Mohammad Isam12-Dec-2020Tamim Iqbal will undergo tests on Sunday after he fell ill during Fortune Barishal’s Bangabandhu T20 Cup match against Beximco Dhaka on Saturday. Iqbal didn’t take the field during Barishal’s defence of 193, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz deputising.Iqbal later wrote on his official Facebook page that he wasn’t feeling well shortly after he was dismissed for 19 off 17 balls, and upon the advice of the BCB’s medical team, returned to the BCB’s bio-secure hotel in central Dhaka.”I wasn’t feeling well since yesterday (Friday),” he posted. “I felt even worse after I returned to the dressing room upon my dismissal. I was feeling very weak. BCB’s medical team advised me to immediately return to the team hotel, and a few overs after I was out, I left the stadium. I will undergo all the tests tomorrow. I am seeking everyone’s prayers. If I am feeling well, I will play the Eliminator match.”However, it is not clear what exactly happened to Iqbal, but Dhaka – and many parts of Bangladesh – is currently experiencing unusually cold weather.Iqbal, who has made 302 runs at an average of 43.14 in this competition, has led Barishal in all the matches except for the second half of this game against Dhaka, which they lost by two runs. As a result, Barishal will face the same opponents in the Eliminator on Monday. The BCB has so far been stringent with their health protocols due to the pandemic, having secured several areas within the hotel where all five teams participating in the Bangabandhu T20 Cup are based. The board has also not allowed crowds at the Shere Bangla National Stadium since domestic cricket resumed in October.

Justin Langer: Will Pucovski won't play in front of Matthew Wade or Travis Head

“But he’s a gun player, he’s knocking hard, and the opportunity will come for him at some point.”

Daniel Brettig25-Nov-20201:08

Don’t need to break something that’s working – Warner

Australia’s coach Justin Langer has sharpened focus on a looming duel between Joe Burns and Will Pucovski for an opening spot in the Test team, declaring that Pucovski will not be considered to start the series against India ahead of Travis Head or Matthew Wade in the middle order. While Pucovski has put his hand up to bat anywhere in the order, having only opened in two matches for Victoria, Langer could not have been clearer in terms of the scenario facing the selectors: Burns is clearly the batsman most likely to be facing pressure for his spot over the three weeks between now and the first ball of the Test series.”He won’t play in front of Matthew Wade or Travis Head,” Langer said. “But what I am saying – philosophically – and in the bigger picture, everyone who bats in the top three in Shield cricket can bat anywhere. And let’s be really clear about Will – one thing I’ve learned and I’ve joked about it. The first six or eight months in the job I didn’t joke about it, because it stressed me out so much.”But as an Australian selector, my starting point is you can’t win. You literally can’t win. That’s ok, I’m at peace with that. If we pick Will Pucovski and don’t pick Joe Burns then the Queenslanders will think we’re wrong and the Vics will think we’re right – and half of Australia will think we’re right and half will think we’re wrong. And if we pick Will Pucovski and don’t pick Matthew Wade, Travis Head, Steve Smith or David Warner – so that’s the starting point. I’m at peace with that. We think very, very highly of Will.ALSO READ: India on notice – Steven Smith ‘finds his hands’ again after disappointing IPL”We picked him as a 19-year-old, picked him as a 20-year-old, now we’re picking him as a 21-year-old (22), so he’s got enormous talent. All part of his journey and now he’s – when the opportunity comes – ready to play Test cricket. So I’m really confident by the time the first ball comes down in a few weeks – there’s a couple of Australia A games coming up – it’ll become really clear who is playing, who the top six batters are. But he’s a gun player, he’s knocking hard and the opportunity hopefully will come for him at some point, whether it’s in this series or a series to come.”More broadly, Langer had indicated a willingness to choose top-order players anywhere down to No. 6, an initial role taken on by many players who went on to become top-line batsmen for Australia, not least the likes of Ricky Ponting and Mark Waugh. Will Pucovski edges into the slips•Getty Images”For Will it’s about where the opportunities come,” Langer said. “My view, not just as the Australian coach but for the last 30 years I think, it’ been drummed into me if you can bat top three in Shield cricket you can bat anywhere in the order. It’s a bit different if you’re more specifically a five or six in Shield cricket because that’s where you’ve got to bat in Test cricket. If you bat in the top three scoring hundreds you can literally bat anywhere in the order.”That’s where someone like Will, who’s opening the batting for Victoria, comes in. He’s batted at three, and it gives him the flexibility to bat anywhere. He knows how to score hundreds, our philosophy in Test cricket is the top six batters have to be able to score hundreds. He sets himself nicely wherever that opportunity comes up.”Asked about Australia’s pace bowling options for the summer, with Michael Neser and Sean Abbott ostensibly backups for Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and James Pattinson, Langer was equally blunt in stating that he hoped the former pair did not play – because it meant the “big four” were fit and firing all the way through three ODIs, three T20Is and four Tests.”I say this with great respect to Sean and Michael Neser but I hope not,” Langer said. “Because it means our bowlers, those three guys will play the first game if they’re fit, healthy and firing. And that’s how you want it to be, you guys are probably sick of me saying it – that old saying, that it’s harder to get out of the team than into the team. I said two-and-a-half years ago when I got the job, that is what we want.”It’s great to see competition building in Australian cricket but I hope nobody else gets to. Because it means they’re bowling well, fit and healthy and we’ve got our three first pick bowlers on the park. But who knows. In cricket we know through this last eight or nine months of Covid period that things can happen and change so quickly. We just have to be agile and whatever happens, we’ll be ready to take on the challenge and bring guys in. But I am so confident the guys we can bring in now are really, really good seasoned cricketers and they’ll fill the shoes if they have to.”Will Pucovski top edged a hook•Getty ImagesAs for the imminent commencement of an international season that had looked in grave doubt for much of the year due to Covid-19, Langer said that any anxiety about the start of the schedule would linger all the way through, given numerous instances of outbreaks that have changed plans for many both within cricket and beyond it.”We’ve been nervous, we’re still nervous, we’ll be nervous until the last ball of the summer’s bowled,” Langer said. “We saw what happened in Adelaide. We saw the creativity of the AFL, I was more closely keeping an eye on the AFL than the NRL and the other codes. We’ve seen the Australian Open, we’re all sensitive to the current environment. We’ll be relieved when we hopefully get through the whole summer.”I know there’s some people who are working around the clock to ensure this series goes on. It’s important not only for the economic health of the game in Australia but also for a lot of people around the world. I know in India at the moment Covid has had a real impact. For the Indians in India and Australians here to watch Australia and India will be great entertainment. Hopefully it will put some smiles on people’s faces – that’s the bigger picture we’re looking at as well.”We can’t wait to get it underway on Friday and we can’t wait to get the last ball bowled of great cricket in Brisbane in a few months’ time.”

Ange’s former £191,000-per-week star could join Spurs as Jorge Mendes works

Ange Postecoglou could bring a former player to Tottenham Hotspur during the 2024 summer transfer window, according to reports.

Tottenham transfer rumours

With the 2024 summer transfer window set to open in England next week, Tottenham have seemingly begun to lay the groundwork for some new additions in north London as they look to return to the Premier League top four, with the top end of the pitch appearing to be a priority for the Lilywhites.

Fabrizio Romano – Tottenham now in advanced talks to sell £20 million star

It could be Spurs’ first summer exit deal out of the way early.

ByEmilio Galantini Jun 8, 2024

Speaking late last month, Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou was asked about attack being an area he wants to strengthen at Tottenham, to which he responded: "Yeah, absolutely. It's no secret. You saw the way we finished the season. We obviously lost Richy and Timo as well with injuries, but we're fairly light in that area.

"We started last season with Manor [Solomon] and [Ivan] Perisic and we were quite healthy in that front third in terms of numbers, but as the year went on, it became pretty evident that we need to bulk up. We're in Europe as well next year so we'll have more games and it's definitely an area of the park we'll need to strengthen."

This has been followed by a number of attacking names being tipped to make a move to north London. It was reported last week that Spurs are expected to initiate discussions with Crystal Palace within the next two weeks regarding the potential signing of Eberechi Eze.

Eberechi Eze for Crystal Palace.

Elsewhere, Tottenham are believed to be preparing a personal terms package for Brentford's Ivan Toney, with a further report claiming the north Londoners are prepared to offer £40m for the Bees striker. Sevilla hitman Youssef En-Nesyri has also emerged as a potentially serious target for Spurs.

£191,000-per-week star could join Tottenham

Now, a fresh attacker has been linked with a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The player in question is former Celtic star Jota, who is currently at Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia.

Jota, who earns £191,000-a-week, opted to leave Celtic for Saudi Arabia last summer for around £25m, going on to score five and assist one in 25 outings for his new club across all competitions. In comparison, the Portuguese scored 15 and assisted 12 in 45 outings for Celtic during the 2022/23 season under Postecoglou.

The 25-year-old's drop in form may have something to do with TEAMtalk reporting that Jota has endured an "unsettled year in Saudi Arabia". The report goes on to detail the winger's struggles in Saudi Arabia, adding that Al-Ittihad could be open to selling him if the price is right.

However, the Saudi powerhouse may not get a full return on their investment if Transfermarkt's current market value is anything to go by – with the Portuguese star at around £7m, which is around £18m less than what they paid Celtic just one year ago.

In terms of clubs who are interested in Jota, TEAMtalk states that his agent, Jorge Mendes, is working hard to secure a move for the winger, who is attracting interest from the Premier League. In particular, Tottenham and West Ham are mentioned, as they were "very interested" in Jota last summer.

Given Spurs are in the market for fresh legs up front and Ange Postecoglou previously worked with Jota during his time at Celtic, it could be a smart move for all involved.
