Finch hit on chest, taken to hospital

Aaron Finch was taken to hospital after been hit on the chest by a delivery while playing for Yorkshire’s 2nd XI on Monday.Finch, the Australia limited-overs opener, was part of the side taking on Worcestershire seconds in Barnt Green, south of Birmingham, when he was hit while attempting a pull shot off the seamer Chris Russell. While Finch walked from the pitch unaided, he was clearly in some pain and, after spitting up blood, was quickly taken to hospital. At hospital he underwent a series of tests and X-rays to ascertain the extent of the injuries, with Yorkshire suggesting that his condition had eased considerably. He was not required to stay in hospital.A club spokesperson later told ESPNcricinfo that he would take no further part in the game. He returned to Leeds on Monday evening and expects the result of the scans on Tuesday. While Finch had been expected to play for the Yorkshire first team in their fixture against Nottinghamshire starting on Monday, the club instead decided he could do with some red-ball cricket before coming into their Championship side.Finch was due to join Yorkshire immediately after a spell in the IPL but suffered a hamstring injury while playing for Mumbai Indians that kept him out for two months.

Board panel has 82 questions for BCCI bosses

The RM Lodha committee appointed by India’s Supreme Court has sent an 82-point questionnaire to top board administrators seeking clarity on the way the richest sports body in India functions

The RM Lodha committee appointed by India’s Supreme Court has sent an 82-point questionnaire to top board administrators seeking clarity on the way the richest sports body in India functions. This questionnaire, incisive and pointed, is in keeping with the committee’s brief from the court to recommend changes to the BCCI’s constitution and manner of functioning. The questions have been split into eight sections, including understanding how the BCCI and its stakeholders function, the basis and formation of the board’s various committees, the board’s election process, players’ welfare, conflict of interest and transparency in the IPL.The questionnaire was sent by the committee on April 7 to all those who have held top positions in the BCCI since the IPL corruption scandal broke in May 2013. They included N Srinivasan, Sanjay Jagdale, Ajay Shirke, Anurag Thakur, Sanjay Patel, Ravi Savant, Anirudh Chaudhry, Amitabh Chaudhary and Jagmohan Dalmiya. There was also a request to be present in person to interact with the panel in Mumbai on April 9 and 10. It is understood that Dalmiya and board secretary Anurag Thakur pulled out despite having confirmed last Wednesday evening the schedule of their arrival.Five key questions

What are your views on the BCCI being constituted as – (i) Society under the Societies’ Registration Act; (ii) Company under the Companies Act; (iii) Public Trust? Which is best suited and why?

What is the basis for zonal rotation of the President? Would it not be appropriate to have open elections for the posts? Can a candidate contest from a zone/region to which he does not belong?

On what basis does the BCCI nominate Indian representatives on the ICC and its various committees? Is there an electoral college and what are the parameters of selection?

On what basis are tour managers and technical crew for the teams selected? Are there tests and interviews? Are these advertised? What is the remuneration for these and do these engagements have tenures or are they open-ended?

To what extent are players represented on the board and is there any channel for their grievances to be aired?

While passing its seminal and wide-ranging order on corruption in the IPL, the court had appointed an independent three-man committee headed by Lodha, a former Chief Justice of India, along with retired Supreme Court judges Ashok Bhan and RV Raveendran. The committee was tasked with determining the quantum of punishment for Gurunath Meiyappan, Raj Kundra and their respective franchises, and also to “examine and make suitable recommendations to the BCCI for such reforms in its practices and procedures and such amendments in the Memorandum of Association, Rules and Regulations as may be considered necessary and proper.”It is understood that the committee, while carrying out the research before it finalised the questionnaire, was concerned about the ad-hoc manner of the BCCI’s functioning. So it sought clarity on aspects like the structural component of the BCCI and the IPL, where the BCCI sources its power from, how the elections are conducted, how are the funds allocated to various stakeholders to name a few areas. One key point in the entire IPL corruption case is the issue of conflict of interest in N Srinivasan, the BCCI president at the time, being the owner of the Chennai Super Kings franchise, facilitated by an amendment to the board’s constitution while Srinivasan was secretary. The Supreme Court had struck down the controversial constitutional amendment that allowed board officials to have commercial interests in the IPL and the Champions League Twenty20, calling it “the true villain of the situation at hand.”So the Lodha committee wanted to know whether there is a “consultation process” for amending the Constitution and bye-laws and if  the BCCI provides “explanation and justification” for such measures. It also raised the question as to how would the BCCI establish when a player or a team official had a conflict of interest. “When a player/team official of an IPL team is the employee of the franchisee/owner of another team, does BCCI perceive a Conflict of Interest? What steps are taken prevent such situations?”Laying special emphasis on player welfare the committee raised 16 questions on the subject including seeking the BCCI’s views on if there should be a players association. India is the only country not to have one.The committee wanted to know whether players form part of the board’s constitution and if there is a platform for them to air grievances.  “Who negotiates contracts on behalf of the players? Are the players consulted by the Board before team sponsorship and endorsement deals are entered into?” was another key question Lodha’s team wanted to know.Transparency was another area the committee laid emphasis on. Twice the panel pointed out whether there was an independent regulator governing important events such as the board elections. “Is there an independent ombudsman for general oversight over the functioning of the BCCI and IPL and what powers are available to it?” the committee asked. It was also interested to know whether the BCCI or the IPL has “a whistleblower/immunity policy”?Although majority of the 82 questions were basic in nature, the panel possibly revealed the broad nature of its inquiry in the final question: “Do you have any suggestions to improve the accountability, elections, governance, transparency and general administration of the game, thereby improving overall integrity of cricket?”Reactions within the BCCI are conflicted. While one official downplayed the issue, saying the process was routine, another insider admitted the questionnaire gives the first indication of the “gravity of ramifications” the report could have on the administration of the game in India.

Six batsmen raised fifties in Karachi, with Punjab Badshahs triumphing against Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Fighters by five wickets. Set a challenging target of 280, Badshahs rode on half-centuries from Nasir Jamshed, Shahid Yousuf and Umar Siddiq to complete the win in 48.5 overs. Badshahs began the chase brightly, as Jamshed stroked an 88-ball 83 and put up 50-plus stands for the first two wickets with Ali Waqas and Yousuf. Jamshed was trapped lbw in the 27th over, but Yousuf and Siddiq carried on, combining for a fourth-wicket association which yielded 104 runs, to set up the win. Yousuf struck five fours during his 63, while Siddiq’s 53-ball 62 featured seven fours and a six.Earlier, Fighters, opting to bat, posted 279 for 7 from their 50 overs. Their innings was built around two big partnerships – 67 for the fourth wicket between Mohammad Rizwan (53) and Adnan Raees (73), and 70 for the fifth between Raees and Zohaib Khan (51). Bilawal Bhatti picked up two wickets for Badshahs, while Wahab Riaz, Raza Hasan and Imad Wasim snared a scalp each.

Malinga five-for cuts Pakistan short

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsLasith Malinga reasserted his skill for rattling chases in a tight finish, after Lahiru Thirimanne had proclaimed his relevance to the ODI format, as Sri Lanka sputtered to a thrilling win in the Asia Cup opener in Fatullah.Pakistan lost their top order cheaply, surged, collapsed, then surged briefly again, in search of 297, but the total that had been set up by Thirimanne’s 102 was 12 too many, despite half-centuries from Misbah-ul-Haq and Umar Akmal.Malinga’s 5 for 52 was his first in ODIs since January 2012, as he claimed the two last Pakistan scalps in an unflappable 49th over replete with tailing yorkers. Bilawal Bhatti and Saeed Ajmal had managed 17 runs from the previous over to whittle the requirement down to 17 from two overs, but Ajmal was caught in front by a yorker, and Bhatti had one clatter into his off stump. Bhatti’s wicket was Malinga’s 250th, and he achieved the milestone faster than any other Sri Lanka bowler, beating Muttiah Muralitharan by 11 matches.Pakistan had earlier seemed in control, with 55 needed off 46 balls and six wickets in hand, thanks to the 121-run stand between Misbah and Akmal. But Malinga was vital to quelling that charge too. He struck twice in four balls in the 45th over, to swing the match strongly in Sri Lanka’s favour, before dismissing Umar Gul in his next. All of his wickets came in his last 15 balls.Lasith Malinga’s five wickets came in his last 15 balls•AFP

During Sri Lanka’s innings, Thirimanne’s 161-run stand, off 146 balls, with Kumar Sangakkara had been the centrepiece. The pair pushed the run rate close to six, promising a total well in excess of 300, but a stutter in the batting Powerplay and a focused Pakistan, led by Saeed Ajmal, in the late overs ensured they did not finish with force.Thirimanne, backed by the selectors to open instead of Mahela Jayawardene, was fluent from the outset, and despite his strike rate of 92.72, was rarely ruled by aggression. A crisp cover drive off Gul brought him his first boundary in the second over, and that stroke – his favourite – proved equally productive against spin. Casually authoritative on the off side to begin with, Thirimanne eventually added a leg side element to his play, even swinging Mohammad Hafeez over deep midwicket for six, in the 31st over.In between the sweetly struck fours, Thirimanne was also adept at measuring singles. Aided by a surface that offered little seam movement or turn, and by Sangakkara’s enterprise at the other end, he eased to his half-century in the 20th over, then launched an offensive after the 25th.For a batsman who has spent much of the past two months sidelined with injury, Thirimanne was as stoic as he was confident. The nineties drew no fidgets or hair-brained strokes. He flitted through them, as he had done throughout his stay, to record his second triple-figure score in ODIs. The milestone, fittingly, came from a cover drive. The celebration, typically, was understated.Though Thirimanne had modeled his strokes and approach on his senior partner, Sangakkara had not been quite so mellow. Often he strode forward against the quicks to make length deliveries overpitched, and his initiative became Sri Lanka’s impetus. He hit 67 from 65 balls, before thumping an Umar Gul bouncer to the only infielder on the leg side.Angelo Mathews embellished his regained stature as a finisher with an unbeaten 55 off 50 balls, but with no secure ally at the other end, he could not attack freely at the close. Ajmal’s varied final spell was Sri Lanka’s biggest hindrance. He finished with 1 for 50 from his full quota, while Umar Gul, who strangely only bowled eight overs, took 2 for 38.Pakistan had fizzled to 121 for 4 in response, before a measured Misbah and an impetuous Akmal fanned the embers of the chase, only to let it grow cold when triumph was in sight. There was little to separate this Misbah half-century from the dozens he has scored in the past 14 months. A staccato of curt defensive prods and opportunistic nurdles broken by startling, occasional blasts: a whack over long-on off Thisara Perera and a slog over midwicket off Sachithra Senanayake cleared the ropes with ease. His innings could have ended at 44 when he gave a feather-edge off Suranga Lakmal, but as the only giveaway to Misbah’s indiscretion was one muffled, woody note, the umpire was unmoved.Akmal’s progress was smoother, until he unleashed towards the end. He carted Suranga Lakmal for 16 in the 41st over and slammed two fours off debutant left-arm spinner Chaturanga de Silva in the next. Angelo Mathews bravely kept Lakmal on and the bowler was rewarded with an edge to the keeper that sparked Pakistan’s late stumble. When Misbah leathered Malinga to deep square leg, it appeared Pakistan were all but done.Lakmal had delivered four overs of accurate away-seam with the new ball, claiming Sharjeel Khan’s wicket, but though he dismissed Akmal, his figures in the final overs suggested he has not yet developed a head for death bowling. Senanayake and de Silva took one wicket apiece, and Mathews himself took the key scalp of Mohammad Hafeez, who had been Sri Lanka’s primary tormentor during the bilateral series in December.

Ojha undaunted by West Indies' attacking approach

Pragyan Ojha, who took his sixth five-wicket haul, in his 24th Test, said he never felt threatened when the batsmen attacked him

Ajit Agarkar on India’s quicks: Upright seam an asset

When Shivnarine Chanderpaul came out to bat in his 150th Test, he danced down and chipped Pragyan Ojha for a six over midwicket first ball. India sent a fielder back to deep midwicket. In the next over, Chanderpaul swept him for four, and India had protection for that too. This was not a defensive move. It was just India knowing that West Indies didn’t have enough confidence in themselves to properly bat out time.India’s strategy remained the same to most of the West Indies batsmen except Marlon Samuels, with whom they probably felt the need to strike early because he could settle down and hurt India. When Mohammed Shami bowled to Samuels, India had four slips and a gully, but no boundary rider. With Chanderpaul, they knew they wouldn’t incur enough damage even if he batted till the end because he doesn’t hit out or farm the strike, and more often than not, the others don’t hang around.Ojha, who took his sixth five-wicket haul, in his 24th Test, to dismiss West Indies cheaply on the first day of the Test for the second time in the series, said he never felt threatened when the batsmen attacked him. “I think it’s very simple you know,” Ojha said. “In a Test match, when a batsman isn’t sure about his defence, he wants to go after you and disturb your line and length. I wasn’t thinking about what he was doing, I was just thinking about my bowling because I knew there was a lot of bounce in the wicket, and if I keep hitting the right areas, it will be difficult for them.”Pragyan Ojha’s sixth five-wicket haul helped bundle West Indies out for 182•BCCI

And right areas Ojha hit. That the five-for came in Tendulkar’s last match made it more special, Ojha said. “It’s a great feeling, getting a five-wicket haul in a special Test match like this,” he said. “Always, getting a five-wicket haul in a Test match is a special feeling.” He dedicated the haul to Tendulkar.Ojha felt the pitch helped the spinners, as did his accuracy. “I think there was some bounce in the wicket and as the ball got older it started turning a bit,” Ojha said. “So it was all about sticking to your basics and keeping tight lines and length and putting pressure.”Ojha said he didn’t mind being overshadowed by Tendulkar’s 38 not out in the final session of the day. “Whatever it is, this Test match belongs to Sachin paaji,” Ojha said. “It’s a special one for all of us. Definitely we all want him to get a lot of runs in this special match, and I don’t mind getting overshadowed.”Ojha is one of the few India players who got some time off to go and play domestic cricket before the start of this season, and he is thankful for that. “I think all the credit goes to domestic cricket,” he said. “I always feel it’s important to go back to domestic cricket and perform there. If you perform there consistently, what our seniors have advised, is that the selectors will notice you.”

Yorks blown away by Cobb

Leicestershire closed their Friends Life t20 campaign in style, racing to a 10-wicket win over Yorkshire with 7.5 overs to spare in a one-sided game

28-Jul-2013
ScorecardLeicestershire closed their Friends Life t20 campaign in style, racing to a 10-wicket win over Yorkshire with 7.5 overs to spare in a one-sided game at Grace Road. The Foxes bowled out Yorkshire for 105 in 17.2 overs and then Josh Cobb and Greg Smith knocked off the runs in 12.1 overs.Foxes captain Cobb, who claimed remarkable figures of 3 for 9 off his four overs, followed that up by hitting an unbeaten 52 off 44 balls, clinching victory with a straight six off Will Rhodes. Smith made 39 off 30, hitting seven fours. The massive defeat sentenced the Vikings, last year’s beaten finalists, to bottom spot in the North Group with five points from 10 matches. It was Leicestershire’s fourth win but, like Yorkshire, they failed to make it through to the quarter-final stages. The Yorkshire innings was a feeble affair after they had won the toss. Only opener Alex Lees showed any real resistance, top-scoring with 32, but it summed up his side’s day when he was run out in an almighty mix-up with Jack Leaning as they tried to take a quick single off a ball that had been signalled a wide. Lees hit five boundaries in his run-a-ball innings. The next highest scorers were Adam Lyth and Azeem Rafiq, who both made 12, but there were no partnerships of note as wickets fell in rapid succession.Cobb, who opened the batting and bowling, did the main damage as his occasional spin picked up the wickets of Gary Ballance, Leaning and Rhodes. Shakib Al Hasan took 2 for 26 and Rob Taylor 2 for 24 while 20-year-old Tom Wells held on to three catches. In contrast, Yorkshire dropped two vital catches, with Cobb put down by Lyth at cover when he was on 13 and Smith let off by Iain Wardlaw at third man on 7. They proved costly misses as the Foxes capitalised by taking 34 runs off the eighth and ninth overs, bowled by Moin Ashraf and Rafiq, and strolled to victory.
