Jesse Ryder has been recalled to New Zealand colours for the first time since February 2012 as part of a 13-man squad for the one-day series against West Indies.Elsewhere in the squad, Martin Guptill has returned from injury and will partner Ryder at the top of the order, meaning that Tom Latham misses out. Tim Southee will miss the first two matches of the series to have a toe problem dealt with, but is expected to return for the third ODI in Queenstown.Ryder has not played at international level after being dropped for disciplinary issues during the one-day series against South Africa. He has since had to serve a six-month suspension for taking banned stimulants, a period which coincided with his recovery from the serious assault he suffered in Christchurch earlier this year.Bruce Edgar, the national selector, said it was a credit to his perseverance that he has responded to so many setbacks. “He’s in great form and he’s in a great space. Go back a number of months ago and it could have been the end of his career. He’s come back with a vengeance and wants to play well and play for the Blackcaps, and that’s what we want.”Since returning to domestic cricket for Otago, following a move away from Wellington, he has scored 454 runs at 64.85 in four Plunket Shield matches. There has been understandable caution about Ryder’s return to the New Zealand fold, but Ryder is now ready to put a tough period behind him.”I set the goal to make it back earlier this year and it is a great end to a tough year for me,” Ryder said. “I’m more motivated than ever to perform for the Blackcaps.”And there won’t be any extra safety nets put in place for Ryder’s return. “Jesse is in the team environment so there’s plenty of support in that environment,” Edgar said.It has also been confirmed that Luke Ronchi will have the wicketkeeping gloves throughout the series. Last week Mike Hesson, the New Zealand coach, confirmed that Brendon McCullum’s days as a wicketkeeper were over due to his back problems.Adam Milne, the 21-year-old Central Districts pace bowler, who was part of the squad in Sri Lanka has been retained despite not taking a wicket in those three matches.Squad: Brendon McCullum (capt), Corey Anderson, Martin Guptill, Mitchell McClenaghan, Nathan McCullum, Kyle Mills, Adam Milne, Colin Munro, James Neesham, Luke Ronchi, Jesse Ryder, Ross Taylor, Kane Williamson

Pujara, Gambhir put India A ahead

ScorecardFile photo – Gautam Gambhir’s knock of 128 was his third first-class century of the year, and the third since January 2010•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

It was a distracting sort of day in Hubli. Even before Sachin Tendulkar announced his retirement, taking the fizz out of the game, there was enough to sidetrack you. West Indies A used four wicketkeepers – one of them not even part of their XI, but allowed on humanitarian grounds, – on two separate occasions bees invaded the field forcing the players to lie prone for minutes, a batsman was hit-wicket and bowled to the same delivery, and the goods train kept honking its horns on the nearby railway track. Gautam Gambhir, though, managed to put all that aside, concentrated hard, got lucky when the concentration broke on the rare occasion, and scored his third first-class century of the year. He has scored only three since January 2010, which is why he finds himself out of the Test side. With Gambhir, for a majority of the innings, was a man with whom he has been discussing batting in the lead-up to the match, Cheteshwar Pujara. The two put on 207 for the second wicket to put India A in a position from where they can push for a win. At the end of the second day, they led West Indies A by 66 runs with seven wickets in hand. While Pujara remained unbeaten on 139, Virender Sehwag fell for a middling 38 after he had begun well and had the dispirited West Indies A attack at his mercy. If that soft dismissal wasn’t enough for Sehwag, he walked back to the news that his good friend, ODI opening partner, mentor and team-mate of 93 Tests, had retired. His reaction was a stunned “Oh, he is retiring?”Gambhir had already been dismissed by then. His century was not quite a scratchy effort, but it had periods where the conviction was missing. It isn’t entirely unexpected of a batsman fighting to come back to form. There were the reassuring off-drives and late cuts, and the milking of the spinners to go with it. Along the way he was helped by the generous fielding: 10 overthrows came his way to go with a dropped chance.Gambhir’s day began with two plays-and-misses in the first over, but he saw off the new ball well. Even during the spells when boundaries didn’t come regularly, he didn’t go out of his way looking for them. He left well on length, and reacted well to the fuller change-up deliveries, either driving them down the ground or clipping them to leg.The first blip in concentration came in the last over before lunch when Gambhir went driving at a wide delivery, but was dropped at second slip by Ashley Nurse. He was 56 then. Soon after lunch other elements would test his concentration. In the first over after the interval, wicketkeeper Jahmar Hamilton hurt his finger, handing the gloves over to Jonathan Carter, who looked pretty uncomfortable but there was no better option around. Soon Carter hurt his finger too, and Nurse had to don the gloves. While that was happening, bees attacked the field. The crowd went wild. Minutes were wasted, and the batsmen wondered what was going on.By the time Nurse took a knock himself, the match referee had allowed West Indies A to use the specialist wicketkeeper Chadwick Walton, who had sat out this game. Even as the surreal session went ahead, the odd delivery would jump out of nowhere. Gambhir was 85 when he tried his dab to third man, but was beaten by a stinger from Delorn Johnson. When Gambhir was 93, the tea break arrived. After the break he went from 93 to 99 without fuss, but grew awfully nervous on one run short of the hundred. The first two balls on 99 went well, but the next six were excruciating even as the 15,000 spectators cheered him on. He tried to rock back and cut, he tried to step out and loft, on the odd occasion he began to run after hitting straight, and also survived a loud lbw shout when he played Nurse across the line. Finally Nurse provided him a long hop, which Gambhir pulled in the air – not high enough to go over the head of a fielder – but in the gap between the two midwickets placed for him. Gambhir couldn’t carry on for much longer. When he went back to cut Narsingh Deonarine, he went too deep into the crease, the bat came down on the middle stump, after which the ball hit the stumps.Gambhir was given out bowled. Just like “bowled” takes precedence even though a decision against a batsman for any other method of dismissal is justified, the Tendulkar news was bound to take precedence.

BCCI suspends Gurunath pending investigations

ESPNcricinfo staff26-May-2013Gurunath Meiyappan, the top Chennai Super Kings official who was arrested by Mumbai Police on Friday night, has been suspended by the BCCI “from any involvement in the sport of cricket and in particular from any involvement with the Chennai Super Kings team” pending further investigations. In a release issued on Sunday morning, the Indian board said: “The BCCI has taken note of the detention by Mumbai Police of Gurunath Meiyappan, who is a member of the team management of Chennai Super Kings. As an accredited team official, Mr Meiyappan is subject to the provisions of the IPL operational rules and the BCCI anti-corruption code for participants. Pending further investigations and any subsequent hearing by the BCCI disciplinary committee or the IPL code of behaviour committee, Mr Meiyappan has been suspended by the BCCI.”Public prosecutor Wajid Sheikh, meanwhile, confirmed to news channel that “the evidence” against Gurunath till now only pointed to betting offences. “We have evidence of betting only at this stage. Only betting,” Sheikh said. “We want to investigate him for fixing also. Till today there is no proof, that which match, which player is fixed.”Gurunath’s family lawyer, PS Raman, said the charges against him were ambiguous and insignificant. “They [Mumbai Police] are yet to find out what he has done, so they have taken him in police remand. Now they say not spot-fixing or match-fixing, but betting,” Raman was quoted as saying in . “This is such a case that anyone can plead guilty and walk out by paying a fine of Rs 200.”It is such a small offense for which Meiyappan would not run away. The quantum of betting is irrelevant. Just because Meiyappan’s number was found in the phone does not mean that he is guilty. He has known Vindoo Randhawa for the past three years or so and was introduced to celebrities by the film actor.”Meanwhile, the BCCI confirmed that its president – who is also managing director of Super Kings’ owner, India Cements, and father-in-law of Gurunath – will address the press at 4pm on Sunday. The three Rajasthan Royals players, Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan, who were arrested on May 16 for alleged spot-fixing, will be produced in a Delhi court today as the stipulated period of their police custody runs out.

Pakistan, West Indies look to tune up ahead of Women's World Cup Qualifiers

Designated captain Javeria Khan, senior player Nida Dar unavailable for series opener

Annesha Ghosh07-Nov-2021Designated captain Javeria Khan, pacer Diana Baig and spin-bowling allrounder Nida Dar has been ruled out of Pakistan’s first ODI against West Indies scheduled for Monday, hindering their preparations ahead of the 2022 ODI World Cup global Qualifier slated to take place in Zimbabwe from November 21.In Javeria’s absence, Sidra Nawaz has been named stand-in captain for the opening ODI of the three-match bilateral series which will be held in its entirety at the National Stadium in Karachi. Pakistan head coach David Hemp put Javeria and Baig’s unavailability down to fitness concerns, saying the duo are not “not quite right” yet though they, along with top-order batter Omaima Sohail “came out of isolation a couple of days ago” after a Covid-19 outbreak in their original 18-member squad forced six players into isolation.According to Hemp, all three players trained with the extended squad on Sunday morning. While Sohail was named in the 12-member squad for Monday’s fixture, Javeria and Baig will miss out along with Dar, who exited the bubble a few days ago following her father’s passing.”As you are aware, we have been hampered by a Covid outbreak cumulatively in our camp from October 22,” Hemp said on Sunday during a virtual press conference. “We still have three players that will return to us over the next three to four days. Today (Sunday) we got three players back into the group, so we now have an extended group but we’re still three players short. We are also short of Nida Dar. Our condolences go to Nida and her family. Unfortunately, her father passed away a few days ago.”

Fixtures (All matches start at 10am local time)

  • 1st ODI: November 8 at National Stadium

  • 2nd ODI November 11 at National Stadium

  • 3rd ODI: November 14 at National Stadium

Despite the trio’s absence, and the unavailability of Bismah Maroof, who is on maternity leave, Hemp, who was appointed Pakistan’s coach in October 2020, backed the home team to come good against West Indies. This series will be his first home assignment.”We have Sidra Amin, Iram Javed, Ayesha Zafar and Aliya Riaz,” he said. “In the top six, we have players that are capable and performing. This [series] is a great opportunity for them.”

West Indies beat Pakistan 3-2 the last time the two teams squared off in a bilateral ODI series in the Caribbean in July-July. Pakistan won the last two matches of that series. Hemp hopes several members of Pakistan’s batting department will look to build on their performances from the Caribbean tour.”Muneeba, she got herself in most of those innings [in West Indies],” he said. “She was disappointed not to go on and get to 60, 70 or even a hundred. Omaima did manage to get through the 30-run mark and a couple of 60s. There has been some progress there.”Stafanie Taylor missed the previous tour to Pakistan in 2019 due to security concerns•IDI via Getty Images

The series – Pakistan’s first home assignment since November 2019 – also marks the return of captain Stafanie Taylor to the West Indies side. She had missed the T20I series against South Africa in Antigua in August-September after being identified as a primary contact of a Covid-19 case in Jamaica, which required her to serve a period of isolation. Now she returns to tour Pakistan after having opted out of the previous tour to the country February 2019 due to security concerns.”It was really disappointing not being in the last ODI series [against South Africa]. I had to take some personal leave of absence,” she said on the even of the series opener. “But I’m back and it’s really good to be back. In Pakistan it’s my first time being here and it’s been good so far.”It seems obvious that we struggled against South Africa. We had some time to go back and reflect on things that we needed to improve our game,” she said. “We were fortunate enough to have a few weeks’ camp in Antigua to rectify some of those errors. So yeah, hopefully, you know, starting tomorrow (Monday), something new.”We are using these games to get the preparation going for the qualifiers, but not looking too far ahead. We definitely want to take away winnings, of course. So not just this practice, but also for us personally, to get some runs and wickets under our belt, and I think looking at not just the qualifiers but also for [the] World Cup [proper next year]. You never know, probably Pakistan again. So, it’s good preparation for us moving forward.”Women’s cricket is set to return to the National Stadium after 15 years•Getty Images

The series also marks the return of international women’s cricket to the National Stadium nearly 16 years after Pakistan last played at the venue in January 2006. Back then, Karachi hosted the Asia Cup during which the home team, India, and Sri Lanka played at Karachi Gymkhana and National Stadium.Spectators up to 50% capacity will be allowed for each of the three matches, though only those with invites – strictly colleges and schools – can attend the first two games. The ground will be open to the general public for the third fixture.West Indies served a three-day quarantine upon landing in Karachi on November 1 and had their first training session on November 5. After the series, which ends on November 14, both teams will travel to Zimbabwe where they will be among the 10 teams vying to secure one of three places for the World Cup to be played in New Zealand in March-April next year.Pakistan squad for first ODI: Aliya Riaz, Sidra Nawaz (captain and wicketkeeper), Anam Amin, Ayesha Zafar, Fatima Sana, Iram Javed, Kainat Imtiaz, Muneeba Ali, Nashra Sandhu, Omaima Sohail, Sadia Iqbal, Sidra AminWest Indies squad for Pakistan tour and World Cup Qualifier: Stafanie Taylor (capt), Anisa Mohammed (vice-capt), Aaliyah Alleyne, Shemaine Campbelle (wk), Shamilia Connell, Deandra Dottin, Sheneta Grimmond, Chinelle Henry, Qiana Joseph, Kycia Knight, Kyshona Knight, Hayley Matthews, Chedean Nation, Shakera Selman, Rashada Williams; Reserves: Cherry Ann Fraser, Shabika Gajnabi, Karishma Ramharack

Clarke casts further doubt over Narine's Test chances

As he ponders an offer to take part in the IPL for the first time, Michael Clarke has cast further doubt over the young West Indian spinner Sunil Narine’s availability to play in the forthcoming Test series against Australia due to contractual obligations to the Indian Twenty20 tournament. The West Indies coach Ottis Gibson has already expressed doubts about his ability to choose Narine for the Tests, which overlap with the first half of the fifth edition of the IPL, given that he is not contracted to the West Indies board and is therefore likely to depart for Kolkata for the entirety of the event.Australia’s batsmen have struggled mightily against Narine’s accurate off breaks and variations, delivered in a flat style ideally suited to the slow, low pitches of the Caribbean. However, Clarke said he was not expecting Narine to figure in the Test series, and had not committed much thought to the prospect of playing against him.”I don’t think he’s playing the Test series,” Clarke said prior to his departure for the West Indies. “I think he’s playing in the IPL the last I heard. I heard the West Indies were going to release him to play the full time in the IPL but I’ve watched him on TV through this series and I’ve seen a little bit of him in the past.”He’s bowled very well. He’s got really good control and he can not only spin his offspinner but the ball the other way so I guess that’s the hardest thing about playing spin, being able to pick him. Once you pick him you still have to play (the ball) and on the wickets so far it’s been quite tough.”If he does take part in the Test series I’m sure we’ll all have a real good look at him.”Narine’s case is the latest instance of the WICB losing the battle to retain its best players for international duty in the face of T20 counter-offers. The most prominent casualty of the struggle has been Chris Gayle, but Narine’s loss would be almost as significant given such a promising start to his time in Caribbean colours.By contrast, Clarke has held back from taking part in the IPL since its inception so he could concentrate on his Australian duties, a commitment he was rewarded for when he attained the captaincy left vacant by Ricky Ponting. However Clarke had noted as early as 2010 that the 2012 IPL may have been an option for him, and while he stopped short of stating his intentions, there was an acknowledgement of negotiations between the Pune Warriors and Clarke’s manager James Erskine.Pune’s captain Sourav Ganguly had caused a stir by stating at a Kolkata promotional function that “we’re on the verge of signing Clarke”, in a deal that would have him fly to India for the closing phase of the tournament following the conclusion of the Tests against the West Indies.”That opportunity has been presented,” Clarke said. “We will continue to talk about it and make a decision in due course. Right now my priority is to make sure I get back and make sure we continue our success in the Test format.”
