Aston Villa: Guilbert leaves the club

Aston Villa defender Frederic Guilbert had been linked with an exit from Villa Park for most of the January transfer window and the Frenchman finally made his move on Sunday.

Guilbert moves on

The club announced that they have finally made the decision to allow Guilbert to join Ligue 1 side Strasbourg on loan for the remainder of the season. They tweeted: “Wishing @FredGuilbert24 all the best for the rest of the season!”. They also wrote how the player has moved on as he seeks regular game time.

Should the club have allowed Guilbert to leave?

The £4.5m-valued ace has struggled for game time at the Villa. He hasn’t featured in the Premier League this season and the last match he played in the division came back in July (Transfermarkt).

When Dean Smith signed Guilbert, he said: ‘He’s one who’s got an awful lot of potential’. However, it’s fair to say that he has struggled to show that potential whilst at Aston Villa.

Therefore, it was for the probably best that the club let the 26-year-old depart, even if it is just on loan.

He can now play some more regular first-team football and the spell away might help him grow as a player. If Villa still feel that he is not to the level they need by the end of the loan, they can then always look to sell him in the summer.

Sunderland: Fans blast Harry Kewell comments after Oldham loss

Plenty of Sunderland fans have been blasting the comments made by Harry Kewell after Oldham Athletic lost 2-1 to Lee Johnson’s team in the Papa John’s Football League Trophy.

The Black Cats won the game thanks to goals from Chris Maguire and Josh Scowen after Bobby Grant had given Kewell’s side the lead early on in the first half.

The former Liverpool, Leeds United and Australian star was not happy with several aspects of the match, and voiced his anger in an interview with Oldham’s official website (via The Chronicle) after the clash:

“I’m actually surprised they get away with it.

“Look, we didn’t know there was a chop and a change of the team at the start – which is not right.”

Kewell was referring to the fact that the kick-off was delayed by 20 minutes as the SAFC team coach was held up in traffic, which meant that Lee Johnson and his players arrived at the stadium just 40 minutes before the kick-off time at 6pm.

The Australian also bemoaned the fact that he did not know that Sunderland made a late change to their starting line-up.

Leeds United must offload Adam Forshaw this January transfer window amid fresh injury update

Leeds United midfielder Adam Forshaw is still not ready for action after a horrible 15-month lay-off.

In response to supporters on Monday, The Athletic’s Phil Hay claimed the 29-year-old “has been trying to get over the last hurdle for a long time”

A hip problem has seen Forshaw sidelined since September 2019 with his final appearance in a Whites shirt being a 45-minute stint against Charlton.

The former Brentford and Middlesbrough man has played a total of seven matches since the start of the 2019/20 season and underwent surgery nearly a year ago in the United States.

With the emergence of Jamie Shackleton, the signing of Rodrigo and Stuart Dallas a natural central midfielder, it’s hard to imagine Forshaw ever playing for the Yorkshire giants ever again.

And because of that, it would be wise for Victor Orta to look to move him on at the earliest convenience, as ruthless as that would be.

Leeds are merely wasting financial resources keeping players like this at the club.

Between Forshaw (£60k-per-week) and Gaetano Berardi (£35k-per-week) alone, they are spending nearly £100k-per-week on a pair of players who aren’t going to contribute one minute to their cause this term.

Those wages could be spent elsewhere – on a central defender who is going to help shut up shop, perhaps?

Indeed, the 5 foot 9 maestro has cost the club around £500k-per-game since the start of their Championship-winning season and overall, around £265k-per-match since his £4.5m arrival in 2018.

It would be a brutal call to sack him off, but United need to look at the bigger picture to help their chances of remaining in the top-flight.

Noel Whelan believes Forshaw would even welcome fresh start elsewhere, he told Football Insider: “The January window has obviously just opened and I’m sure he wants to go and get settled in a team where he can play football. He’s a good footballer, so I’m sure that will be on his mind.”

Orta must show no mercy over the “exceptional” and long-serving midfielder this month.

Leeds: Orta must sign off on William Saliba January loan move

Leeds United have been tipped to be interested in signing William Saliba on a temporary basis in January. Kevin Campbell believes that the Whites “would love” to bring him to Elland Road as Arsenal hope to see him gain some valuable first team experience (via Football Insider).

The 19-year-old signed for the Gunners in 2019 in a £27million deal, before being loaned back to former club Saint-Etienne. Saliba attracted a lot of attention during his time in France, commanding the spotlight in his transition from youth to first team football.

His former coach Fabio Frasconi tipped the centre-back to “go very far” after likening him to France international Raphael Varane (via Planet Football).

Saliba could mend Leeds injury troubles

If Leeds pursue a move for the teenager then they would be answering a lot of questions raised around their squad right now. The Whites are struggling massively with their squad depth and received a double fitness blow when Robin Koch and Diego Llorente both picked up injuries earlier this month.

Marcelo Bielsa has been forced to use full-back Luke Ayling as a stand-in central defender whilst the duo are sidelined. Although he’s been doing a solid job so far, the boss cannot rely on him to play out of position for months to come.

That’s why signing Saliba would be a huge statement for the club. Not only would they be plugging a leak in their defence but the Arsenal prospect would relish in the chance to play regular first team football in the Premier League.

The Gunners clearly have big plans for the youngster, else they wouldn’t have spent such a large sum on such a young player. There’s likely no chance of a permanent deal being offered, which suits Leeds considering they spent a hefty amount in the previous transfer window.

Recruiting Saliba on loan would be the ideal move as it wouldn’t affect Koch’s place in the squad next season but it would still help keep them afloat this campaign.

Brighton & Hove Albion: Bernardo wanted by three clubs for potential loan move

Brighton defender Bernardo is attracting interest from three clubs amid rumours of a potential loan exit from the Amex Stadium.

Sky Sports reported that the Seagulls are in talks with Turkish champions Istanbul Basaksehir over a possible season-long loan for the 25-year-old, with Premier League duo West Ham and Newcastle also looking at the left-back as a potential recruit.

Left-back Bernardo has made 43 appearances in two years at Brighton but, having started 19 Premier League games in his first season at the club, he made just seven league starts last term, with Dan Burn often preferred by Graham Potter on the left flank.

With the ex-Wigan defender more conventionally a centre-back, Bernardo is actually the only natural left-back in the Seagulls’ first team squad, although it is perhaps an indication of his current standing that Potter would rather play a central defender at left-back than the Brazilian, who is a natural fit for the role.

The 25-year-old’s place could come under further threat from the potential arrival of Rico Henry, with Albion considering a move for the Brentford left-back and the Bees expecting the 23-year-old to leave the Championship club in this transfer window, as per Sussex Live.

In 2019/20, Bernardo actually won more tackles (1.9 to 1.5) and headers (2.2 to 1.9) per game than Henry, so some may argue that the Brentford defender mightn’t necessarily be an upgrade on the Brighton left-back.

It would be understandable if Bernardo wishes to try his luck on loan elsewhere, given that he has struggled for game-time under Potter despite being Brighton’s only genuine left-back.

However, if a loan exit is sanctioned, that leaves the Seagulls manager potentially sweating on getting a deal done for Henry. Otherwise, he will have no option but to utilise Burn at left-back for another season and pray that he doesn’t fall victim to injury or suspension.

Spurs fans slam Moussa Sissoko after Birmingham performance

Despite having to undergo knee surgery at the start of the calendar year, Moussa Sissoko proved himself to be one of the first names on the team-sheet under both Mauricio Pochettino and Jose Mourinho at Tottenham last season.

When fit, he played in every single game for the north London side barring the Carabao Cup defeat to Colchester United, eventually racking up a total of 35 appearances across all competitions.

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

But with the arrival of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Southampton, Sissoko’s starting place is under threat, and after being given the opportunity to play from the off against Birmingham City in pre-season on Saturday, he didn’t seem to take his chance.

After seeing his performance, Spurs fans took to Twitter to criticise the midfielder for his display.

A couple of Spurs supporters suggested Sissoko isn’t good enough to be playing for the club, and that he should be sold, with one fan even saying that he should have gone a long time ago.

Another couple of fans even expressed their relief at seeing Sissoko being substituted for Hojbjerg during the game.

The versatile Sissoko is the kind of player arguably every team in the Premier League needs. He may not be the most flashy, or one to notch up plenty of goals and assists, but he can be relied upon to play anywhere where the manager needs him.

Last season even saw him fill in at right-back on occasion, and there is a lot of value to keeping him in the squad. He may not be the man to lead Spurs to a top-four finish, but he is the definition of a role player who can offer Jose Mourinho a lot of different uses.

Manchester United: Fans wax lyrical over Fabrizio Romano’s Jadon Sancho transfer update

Manchester United have entered an ‘advanced stage’ in negotiations to sign Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund this summer, reports say.

According to Fabrizio Romano, as per @utdreport, both clubs are yet to reach an agreement for Sancho but talks are still ongoing.

Personal terms will reportedly not be a problem and he will be offered a contract which will expire in 2025.

Recent reports revealed the Red Devils are increasingly confident of completing a deal for the 11-cap England international and progress seems to have been made.

Sancho, 20, was the Bundesliga club’s top scorer last season, having scored 20 goals and supplied 18 assists (via WhoScored).

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made it clear that the right winger is the signing he needs to rebuild the Red Devils midfield before the start of the 2020/21 Premier League season.

As it stands, Man United have not made an official bid for the attacking playmaker, but the Englishman is willing to wait and see if the two sides can sort out a deal.

The Old Trafford club have been chasing Sancho for several years now but they seem to be one step closer to finally bringing him back to his homeland in the summer.

Unsurprisingly, many United fans waxed lyrical over Romano’s “fantastic” update on social media, with one supporter dubbing the club “gargantuan.”

Everton: Fans react to transfer news as Gabriel prefers Napoli move

Plenty of Everton fans have been reacting to a recent report from Area Napoli, which confirmed the Merseyside club’s interest in Lille man Gabriel from as early as April.

However, Carlo Ancelotti has potentially been dealt a major blow if he is to pursue the central defender in the upcoming summer transfer window, as his agent Fernando Garcia has spoken out about his client and said that he likes Napoli as a team and Gennaro Gattuso as a manager.

This means that if the Italian side and the Toffees were to battle it out for him, Gabriel may well choose Napoli over them based on the latest comments from his agent.

Indeed, this piece of news has rather caused a stir on Twitter, as one EFC supporter even claimed that he would ‘rather Kurt Zouma came back’.

Comparing the Chelsea ace’s time at Goodsion Park in the 2018/19 season to that of Gabriel in this campaign, the French centre-back achieved more interceptions and clearances per domestic league game, according to Whoscored.

Perhaps the fan is right to want Zouma back instead, as these other Blues reacted to the report:
