Carlton Palmer drops Southampton verdict on Van Aanholt move

Former Southampton midfielder Carlton Palmer has told The Transfer Tavern that free agents are likely to be the way forward for the south coast outfit this summer.

The Saints have already secured the services of Theo Walcott following his loan spell last season on a free after his release from parent club Everton.

According to Transfermarkt, Southampton’s net-spent last season was around £11m, meaning a summer spending spree at St Mary’s is unlikely.

Captain James Ward-Prowse has been strongly linked with a move to Aston Villa following his fine form for both club and country, which could free up some funds, but it’s unlikely Southampton will want to sell their best players.

One player than has already left is Ryan Bertrand, who’ll officially exit the club at the end of this month once his deal expires.

Bertrand’s departure leaves Southampton with no recognised senior left-backs, so Palmer was asked whether he thinks Patrick van Aanholt would be a good addition following his release from Crystal Palace.

When asked about the Dutchman, who was praised by Marcelo Bielsa after Palace’s 4-1 victory over Leeds last season, he exclusively told The Transfer Tavern:

“They haven’t got much money in terms of big salaries, so that’s what they’ve got to be looking at, free transfers, and somebody that can come in and enhance the team. That’s the market they’re in.”

Richard Pybus speaks frankly

Q: Where did your love of cricket come from and why did you turn to coaching?A: When I was eight I was so bad at school that my parents sent me to a primary school that had small classes to get special attention. They played cricket and rugby as prior to that the only game I knew was soccer and being a Geordie (i.e. from Newcastle, UK), I was soccer mad. I was made to teach physical education classes at school because some of the acade-mic teachers didn’t want me in their classes. Bit disruptive, they said. All I wanted to do was be outside and play sport and I suppose it blossomed from there, so when I had my umpteenth spell on the surgeon’s table for cricket and rugby injuries when I was 25, I turned to coaching full time.Q: Your appointment as coach to the Pakistan World Cup side was big news. How difficult was it to accept the position given the suddenness of the appointment and involvement with the Border Bears?A: Joining the Pakistan team for the World Cup didn’t affect the Border setup as we had already finished the season, it wasn’t a difficult decision (although Ali Bacher wasn’t too happy) because if you’re not aiming to accept the biggest challenges in the game, what are you doing the job for?Q: How would you describe your relationship with the Pakistan team and management during the World Cup?A: All the players were fantastic but the only downside was our manager who was a bumbling idiot. He would order the physio to treat him –for old age! — and the players would have to wait until he had finished. He was later appointed interim chairman of the board after the military coup in Pakistan and it was he who was responsible for sacking me.Q: What were your feelings on learning of your sacking and what do you think the reasons behind it were?A: My feelings were disbelief and anger. The chairman didn’t even have the balls to see me personally, he got one of his henchmen to do it for him. I believe the reasoning behind it was that he didn’t want a foreigner doing the job, it was a political decision made by him and him alone. He didn’t consult the captain, Wasim Akram, nor the manager, before he made it. But what goes around, comes around and he was sacked as chairman shortly afterward! .Q: Looking back, would you have made the same decision to have coached Pakistan?A: Yes,I knew that Graham Ford would be coaching the South African side up to the next World Cup so there wouldn’ be any openings there and when you are invited to coach one of the best sides in the world, where you already have an excellent relationship with the players, you have to accept these challenges. If there hadn’t been a military coup –the army sacked the then cricket board — one day after I signed my contract then I would still be in the job.Q: Do you ever think you will coach South Africa one day. If not, why?A: Not in the near future. I don’t think Ali Bacher is my greatest fan!Q: To the future. What does being back home and coaching the Border Bears mean to you?A: It’s great to be home and to be working with such a great group of guys again. That’s what makes it so special — the relationship with the players.Q: The team has done incredibly well the past two seasons. What do you put that down to?A: A common vision for the whole business, good administrative staff, good support systems, good facilities, good players and above all the best skipper in SA cricket in Pieter Strydom.Q: Losing out in three finals must have been terribly disappointing. Will it be difficult to lift the side mentally this season?A: No, we are hungrier than ever.Q: What do you hope to achieve with the Bears this season?A: Win the SuperSport trophy and Standard Bank Cups.Q: How strong is Border cricket when it comes to current depth?A: Exciting times lie ahead with a nucleus of young players below the age of 24. Mark Boucher, Makhaya Ntini, Geoff Love, Laden Gamiet, Ian Mitchell, Dumisa Makalima to name but a few. Offset this with the experience of our senior players and the future is very positive.Q: What advice would you give a batsman who is struggling to find form. Similarly to a bowler you know can do better?A: Whether it be a batsman or a bowler each individual needs to know where he wants to get to. VISION is important. From there they need to take stock of where they are now, assess their strengths and weaknesses and get a firm plan of how they are going to address these areas, making sure that they focus on positive aspects of their performance to maintain confidence while they turn weaknesses into strengths. They need to utilise their coach to get accurate feedback and to evaluate their progress. In fact this goes for every sport, and not just cricket.Q: Briefly, what makes Richard Pybus tick as a person when he’s not coaching? What are your hobbies and interests, tell us a bit about your family, etc.A: Firstly, my relationship with God takes priority, secondly, spending as much time as possible with my daughter, Jessica. Thirdly, keeping fit — although I do have the odd vice! — and last, but not least, reading and learning about anything and everything, which is probably why I wasn’t teachers pet, as I was never interested in the school syllabus. But for any kids who want to use my earlier comments about school as an excuse not to study, think again. I did graduate from university, so do make sure you pass your exams, those bits of paper come in quite useful later in life.

Rangers missed out on Harry Winks

Rangers were reportedly extremely close to signing Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks back in 2016 and considering his impressive career since then, you could definitely argue that Mark Warburton missed out on having his quality at Ibrox.

Former Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday confirmed in a recent interview with Open Goal (via Glasgow Live), that:

“I remember doing a warm-up and Harry Winks came in for a day. He didn’t train though.

“I think everything was agreed and he was coming anyway. He was at the training ground being shown about. He didn’t train.

“A day later, it didn’t happen. He stayed at Tottenham.”

The 2016/17 season saw Rangers finish third in the Premiership, whilst their Old Firm rivals Celtic were able to win the league unbeaten, so it is not a memorable one for a lot of Bears fans.

Warburton was sacked as manager in February, with Pedro Caixinha arriving as his replacement a month later, and perhaps if the sporting director at the time Mark Allen had been able to complete the loan deal for Winks, then Rangers’ performances would have improved and Warburton could have kept his job.

Clearly, Mauricio Pochettino and the Tottenham Hotspur staff would be won over by Winks and he would go on to make 21 appearances in the Premier League for the North London club that season, suggesting he would have been more than good enough for the Rangers squad at the time.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-rangers-news-transfer-rumours-and-more-copy-copy” title=“Latest Rangers news, transfer rumours and more from Ibrox!”]

The Argentine manager was a huge fan of the Spurs academy graduate, describing him as “amazing” in 2019 and even comparing him to Barcelona legends Andres Iniesta and Xavi back in 2018, but unfortunately for Winks, he would lose his regular starting spot following Jose Mourinho’s arrival in 2019.

The England international, who is currently valued at £19.8m by Transfermarkt, has made just seven starts in the Premier League this season and a summer exit could well be on the cards for the 25-year-old.

However, he still possesses a lot of quality and would have undoubtedly been an excellent addition to Rangers’ squad back in the summer of 2016, so it could definitely be described as something of a disaster by Mark Allen to have him at the training ground one day but fail to sign him the next.

Newcastle transfer claim on Tyler Roberts

Frank McAvennie has dropped an encouraging transfer claim on Tyler Roberts and whether he would fit in at Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: Newcastle eyeing Roberts

As per Football Insider, the Magpies are closely monitoring the 22-year-old ahead of a potential move from Leeds United once the summer transfer window opens.

He is out of contract at Elland Road in 2022 and is yet to agree an extension, so the Whites may view a deal this summer as a good opportunity to cash in on him in order to gain some value from a transfer fee rather than risk losing him for nothing next year.

The Latest: McAvennie claims Roberts would start at Newcastle

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie – who is now a pundit after playing for the likes of West Ham United and Celtic – has claimed that Roberts would be a starter under Steve Bruce at St James’ Park, believing that the Toon Army would instantly warm up to him. The 61-year-old said:

“If he’s not getting a game, I think so.

“If you’re not playing you have to ask to leave. If he goes to Newcastle he’ll be a starter straight away.

“They have great fans and they will love him up there if he hits the ground running.

“Roberts can ask for guarantees but the manager can’t give them. He can only give them if he’s playing well.

“You can’t tell a player he will always start because what if he starts playing badly? It’s a stupid statement.

“At his age, he’s got to be playing.”

The Verdict: Roberts would add to Newcastle squad

Roberts is certainly a player who could add something to the Magpies squad, and with the added experience of playing at Premier League level under Marcelo Bielsa, he would not have to adapt to the demands of the division were he to join Newcastle.

McAvennie’s point about his game-time is also pertinent – while the forward has played in 26 league games this season, only 14 of those have been as a starter.

Also, at just 22 years of age, Roberts should get even better over the next few years, while his added versatility is also a quality which could be very useful to have on Tyneside next season, especially with the amount of injuries the Magpies have incurred to key players such as Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson.

The Welshman would certainly seem to be a smart buy should Newcastle look to sign him in the summer.

Celtic: Alan Nixon provides Mourinho update

Former Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho has been the latest coach to be linked with a move to Celtic.

Speculation has mounted in recent days, with reports suggesting the Hoops approached the 58-year-old following his sacking in north London.

Reliable reporter Alan Nixon has now had his say on the rumours regarding Celtic and Mourinho. The Sun journalist was asked by a Hoops fan on Friday evening if there is any truth in the links to the Portuguese native.

He replied in three simple words: “Can’t see it.”

Transfer Tavern take

We’re with Nixon here in feeling that a move for Mourinho won’t gather any real pace.

For starters, look at his salary at Spurs. He was thought to be on a £15m-per-year deal in the English capital. Former Celtic managers Neil Lennon and Brendan Rodgers were on £2.4m-a-year and £2.3m-a-year respectively, so that just shows the huge financial comparison.

Roma and Valencia are also thought to be keen on Mourinho’s services, so due to the money which would be required to lure him to Parkhead amid interest from other clubs, we can’t see this one materialising.

Moyes must axe Fredericks from West Ham XI

West Ham United will be looking to get back on track when they return to Premier League action this evening.

David Moyes’ side have suffered successive defeats, seeing them drop out of a place in the top-four but they now head to Burnley knowing that a victory would see them cut the gap to Chelsea.

It was the Blues who narrowly defeated the Hammers last time out, winning 1-0 at the London Stadium and the 58-year-old manager now has plenty to ponder in terms of team selection.

You could argue that the Irons more than held their own throughout the 90 minutes, given the scoreline, but the statistics tell a different story as the visitors dominated possession (56%) and enjoyed eight more attempts at goal, as per SofaScore.

It was certainly a tough task in the absence of some key players like Declan Rice, Michail Antonio and Aaron Cresswell. However, those that stepped in failed to deliver and have to be at risk of Moyes wielding his axe.

One name that should be ruthlessly chopped from the starting XI is Ryan Fredericks. He played at left-back, out of position, and that proved to be a very problematic area of the pitch as Mason Mount and Cesar Azpilicueta dominated for large spells.

The 28-year-old lost possession 13 times and was particularly wasteful with the ball, too, completing only 67% of his passes and failing to provide a single accurate cross.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-latest-west-ham-transfer-rumours-gossip-latest-moyes-gsb-london-stadium” title= “Read the latest West Ham news, transfer rumours, gossip and more!”]

It left Jesse Lingard and Jarrod Bowen, who spearheaded Moyes’ attack, with very little to feed off, so it was no wonder they managed four fewer shots on target than Chelsea.

Ben Johnson has often been the man to go to left wing-back if either of Cresswell or Arthur Masuaku are missing, and perhaps he would be the better option against the more defensively-minded Clarets.

The 21-year-old academy gem “really impressed” Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville last season, with the former Man Utd right-back also claiming that he “looks an excellent defender.”

Whilst he was rather unlikely to lose his place for the Chelsea encounter, considering he was a rare positive in the defeat to Newcastle United a week earlier.

In terms of consistency, Fredericks is amongst Moyes’ worst performers, registering a paltry 6.47 average on WhoScored. And his returns of 0.5 crosses and 0.8 key passes per game rank as the worst when compared to Cresswell, Vladimir Coufal and Masuaku.

The £40k-per-week star just isn’t good enough to be starting for a West Ham side competing for a fierce European spot. He was shocking against Chelsea and has very rarely looked the part this term.

Moyes must show no mercy and axe the Hammers lightweight tonight.
