Spurs ‘watching’ Pochettino situation

Speaking to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur ‘insider’/club source John Wenham has made a managerial claim involving Mauricio Pochettino.

The Lowdown: Pressure on Nuno…

This Sunday could play centre stage to one of the most crucial games of Tottenham’s season already as the pressure grows on new manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

After a brilliant start, even managing to pick up the Premier League Manager of the Month award for August, the 47-year-old is now at the centre of reported unrest behind the scenes.

Tottenham have lost their last three league games in humiliating fashion, conceding three goals to a trio of their London rivals in the space of a few weeks.

Now, Wenham made a managerial claim involving former fan favourite Pochettino.

The Latest: Pochettino claim dropped…

As per the Spurs insider/club source, who regularly breaks news on his social media channel Lilywhite Rose, Tottenham and by extension chairman Daniel Levy ‘are watching’ Pochettino’s situation at Paris-Saint Germain.

“Tottenham are watching the situation at PSG,” Wenham told Football Insider.

“The Messi-Pochettino thing has somewhat quietened down by the looks of things.

“If Pochettino became available, would Tottenham replace Nuno with him?

“I think they would. All you have to do is look at how hard Levy went for him in the summer.

“They were scared off by the financial muscle of PSG. I think that is the only way Tottenham would get rid of Nuno.”

The Verdict: Tall order…

Nuno arguably hasn’t had enough time to change Tottenham’s fortunes and it’s only logical he gets a fair crack at the whip.

If results continue to slump in devastating fashion as they have done, though, Pochettino would come as an amazing appointment if they can prise him away from the French capital – especially considering former keeper Heurelho Gomes called him a ‘football genius’.

However, Spurs tried and failed to bring him back to N17 earlier this year and it could be an even taller order now given the squad Pochettino has to play with at PSG.

As it stands, Levy bringing back the £115,000-per-week boss certainly seems unlikely from our point of view.

Fulham struck gold on Tosin Adarabioyo

While Fulham’s transfer business in the past few years has been questionable at times, with the Cottagers shelling out £27m on Jean Michael Seri and £10.5m on Anthony Knockaert, there have also been a number of deals that have proven to be extremely smart moves by Tony Khan and his transfer team.

Arguably the most impressive of these deals was Fulham’s £1.49m signing of Manchester City centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo, with the 23-year-old having already demonstrated that he is a player worth considerably more than the nominal fee the club paid for his services.

Khan struck gold

Indeed, following his move to west London back in 2020, the centre-back highly impressed over his 33 Premier League appearances in Fulham’s 2020/21 campaign, helping his side keep nine clean sheets, as well as making an average of 1.3 interceptions, 1.1 tackles, 5.8 clearances and winning 4.1 duels per game,

These returns saw the former England U19 international earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.92, ranking him as Scott Parker’s ninth-best performer in the top flight that season – a highly impressive feat for a defender when taking into account the club’s relegation.

The £27k-per-week man has continued his upward trajectory over eight Championship appearances so far this term, helping the Cottagers keep two clean sheets, as well as making an average of 1.4 interceptions, one tackle, 3.8 clearances and winning four duels per fixture.

These metrics have seen the 23-year-old average a rather remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.21, ranking the player Tony Mowbray dubbed an “exceptional” talent as Marco Silva’s fifth-best player in the second tier.

As such, it will likely come as no surprise to Fulham fans that Adarabioyo is now valued by Transfermarkt at £10.8m, or why a number of Premier League sides were reported to be interested in the centre-back in the summer transfer window.

And, with the sky very much appearing to be the limit for the defender’s potential, his value will only be heading in one direction in the years to come – with Tony Khan looking to have struck gold upon signing the youngster 12 months ago.

Forest dealt Max Lowe transfer blow

Nottingham Forest have been dealt a major blow in their bid to bring Max Lowe to the City Ground this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Football League World, who claim that Dane Murphy’s side have seen an offer of a season-long loan for the left-back turned down by Sheffield United.

The report goes on to state that both Reading and Swansea City are also believed to be interested in the defender, while it is unclear whether Forest will continue their pursuit of the 24-year-old following their failed approach.

Murphy must move

With there having been something of a defence overhaul at Nottingham Forest this summer, with all of Yuri Ribeiro, Nikolas Ioannou, Michael Dawson and Michael Hefele having departed the club, while it is also clear that there is no real future for either Carl Jenkinson or Gaetan Bong in Nottingham, Chris Hughton has been left rather short in a number of positions across his backline.

However, it is undoubtedly at left-back where the 62-year-old lacks the most depth, with the former Norwich City manager having to recall Bong from his exile in order to field a player in the position so far this season.

As such, it would certainly appear as if the position is somewhere Murphy must strengthen prior to the closure of the summer transfer window next Tuesday, with Lowe appearing to be a fantastic candidate for the club.

Indeed, while the former England U20 international failed to cement a place in the Sheffield United starting XI last season, making just eight appearances in the competition, the left-back nevertheless proved in the campaign prior he is an extremely capable option in the Championship.

Indeed, over his 29 second-tier appearances for Derby County back in 2019/20, the £2.7m-rated man helped his side keep three clean sheets, as well as making an average of 1.6 interceptions, 3.7 tackles, 1.6 clearances and winning a whopping 6.9 duels per game.

These returns saw the man Alan Biggs dubbed a “proven Championship performer” earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.83, earning the £14k-per-week defender a £3.47m move to the then-Premier League side Sheffield United.

So, the signing of Lowe would not only have plugged a gap that needs filling for Hughton, his addition would also more than likely have helped to raise the overall level of defending in the Forest backline, something that is desperately needed at the City Ground at present – leading us to believe Murphy should indeed do all he can to secure a deal for the left-back over what remains of the summer transfer window.

MUFC ace Sancho leaves England squad

Some Manchester United fans have been left fuming as an update emerged on Jadon Sancho.

As per the Red Devils’ official website, the former Borussia Dortmund star will miss England’s remaining September fixtures at home to Andorra and away to Poland respectively.

He missed the 4-0 win in Hungary on Thursday because he sustained a slight injury in training, and it appears to be more serious than first thought given that he has had to withdraw from the England squad.

Manchester United fans will surely be hoping that Sancho can recover in time for them to play Newcastle in their first game back after the international break next Saturday, especially with the prospect of linking up with Cristiano Ronaldo on the veteran’s second Old Trafford debut.

Aston Villa: Villans readying McKennie bid

Aston Villa are ready to meet Juventus’ demands for midfielder Weston McKennie, according to Corriere dello Sport, cited by Sports Witness.

The Lowdown: McKennie profiled

McKennie, a USA international, is a central midfielder who can also play in a defensive role or on the right-hand side.

He made his loan move to Juventus from Schalke permanent this summer in a deal worth £18.45m.

McKennie, described as a ‘leader’ by David Wagner, has made 46 appearances for the Italian giants and has turned out in a remarkable eight separate positions during his career.

The Latest: Villa bid

According to Corriere dello Sport, cited by Sports Witness, Villa are ready to satisfy Juventus’ €30m (£25.7m) valuation for McKennie.

The report added that McKennie ‘did not accept’ a move to West Ham and also ‘doesn’t like’ the sound of a Villa Park switch.

However, they finish their story by saying that might change before the end of the month, so a deal could be one to keep a close eye on.

The Verdict: Avoid

If McKennie doesn’t like the sound of a Villa Park switch, then Johan Lange and co should end Villa’s interest straight away.

The club have managed to lure the likes of Emi Buendia and Leon Bailey to the Midlands this summer, so if McKennie isn’t keen, perhaps Villa should look elsewhere.

The report claims that McKennie might have a change of heart in the final days, but it sounds as if he wants a move to Tottenham, so Villa shouldn’t wait around and play second best.

Fulham dealt Aboubakar Kamara transfer blow

Fulham have been dealt a blow in their bid to secure Aboubakar Kamara an exit from Craven Cottage this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Peter Rutzler, with The Athletic journalist revealing in a post on Twitter that talks regarding the 26-year-old’s proposed £4m switch to Aris Salonica have collapsed.

In his tweet, Rutzler said: “It’s understood that talks regarding a £4m transfer for Fulham’s Aboubakar Kamara to Greek Super League side Aris Salonica have broken down.”

Silva will be fuming

Considering just how poor Kamara has been for Fulham in recent seasons, reports that a deal which would have seen the striker seal an exit from Craven Cottage this summer – particularly for a fee of £4m – has fallen through is sure to have left Silva frustrated.

Indeed, over his 11 Premier League appearances for Fulham last term, the £1.8m-rated man scored no goals, registered no assists and missed one big chance, averaging just 0.2 shots on target per game.

These returns saw the man Claudio Ranieri dubbed “disrespectful” when he dislodged regular penalty taker Aleksandar Mitrovic to hit a spot kick in 2018, only to duly miss, earn an average SofaScore match rating of 6.36, ranking him as the Cottagers’ fifth-worst performer in the top flight.

Seemingly as a result of these disappointing displays, in addition to his considerable £21k-per-week wages, Scott Parker subsequently sent the Mauritania international out on loan to Dijon for the second half of the campaign.

As such, it would very much appear as if Kamara’s time at Fulham is all but up, and with Aris having offered an extremely generous figure for the striker, this move would have been a fantastic outcome for Marco Silva and the west London club.

However, with his proposed switch to Greece now appearing dead in the water, Tony Khan and Fulham’s transfer team will now have to get to work on finding the 26-year-old a new club.

In other news: Khan could have finally replaced Fulham legend with “outstanding” £19k-p/w beast

Tauqir right man to head PCB

When Lt

Imran Naeem Ahmad20-Oct-2002When Lt. Gen Tauqir Zia took over as the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board in 1999, he perhaps did not realize that whatever he would do, it would come under microscopic analysis and rapt scrutiny. Two years and 10 months on, he chooses to quit, not because of any wrong he did but for the disgraceful second Test defeat the Pakistan suffered at the hands of Australia in Sharjah this month.President Gen Pervez Musharraf, the PCB Patron, fortunately did not accept the resignation, as he felt Tauqir was the right man to handle the hot seat of Pakistan cricket and that it was inappropriate for him to go with the World Cup just a stone’s throw away.Tauqir has had to take a lot of criticism virtually throughout the time he has been in charge of the sport that attracts attention for every little move you make -good or bad. Ask the chairman and he would tell you that all his efforts are genuinely aimed at improving the country’s cricket and making Pakistan team the top side again, as they were some months ago. Before Tauqir decided to resign, he drew criticism no matter what he did. Whether it was the induction of new players, hiring or firing of a coach, or axing a few senior cricketers, there was bound to be criticism. But it has been criticism for the sake of it because critics tend to forget that this man who is at the helm today has done so much for our cricket that none of his predecessors could think of doing. If starting the national and the regional academies is not a good step, then what is? If promoting cricket at the junior level, ignored previously, is not beneficial then what is?Today we have an under-15 side that is in the process of being selected for this December’s Junior Asia Cup in the UAE. There’s an under-19 team that took part in the Junior World Cup in New Zealand this year and then we have Pakistan ‘A’ that beat their opposite number from Sri Lanka only recently. If this is not good for our cricket, then what is?Thanks to Tauqir, cricket is flourishing at the grassroots level because that is where back up to the national team would eventually come from. Today we have players such as Yasir Arafat and Najaf Shah, who have the potential of serving the national team. Good for our cricket, isn’t it?Talk of infrastructure development and the PCB has chalked out a systematic plan with some of the main stadiums being upgraded and club grounds at various centres to be developed. Only a mad-hatter would say it is bad for our cricket.PCB managers in the past never initiated any systematic infrastructure plan and if Tauqir has had the vision and the guts of doing so, he certainly deserves credit.Tauqir does want to do more but his lieutenants, including Ramiz Raja are letting him down. A good part of the year, he is globetrotting commentating on one match after the other. How could he justify his job at the PCB, one fails to understand. Similarly, the selectors too have left a lot to be desired, their wrongs not reflecting well on the general. While his aides could be doing a better job, for now we need to thank president Musharraf for having averted a major crisis on the eve of the World Cup that could have effectively ruined Pakistan’s chances in the tournament. A good decision for our cricket, isn’t it?

Pundit says Aiden McGeady can be key for Sunderland - Exclusive

Steve Howey has exclusively told Football FanCast that Aiden McGeady can be the difference-maker for Sunderland next season.

The 35-year-old was left out in the cold by former manager Phil Parkinson during the first half of the 2020-2021 season.

However, following the appointment of Lee Johnson just before Christmas, McGeady immediately came back into the side and produced some outstanding numbers to help the Black Cats reach the top-six.

In just 35 appearances in all competitions, McGeady scored six times and added an impressive 17 assists.

Despite turning 36 in April, McGeady was rewarded with a 12-month contract last month to extend his stay at the Stadium of Light into a fifth campaign.

Three of the previous four have been at League One level as Sunderland look to end their painful stay in the third-tier and get back into the Championship.

Following McGeady’s contract extension, ex-Newcastle midfielder Howey was asked whether the experienced attacker can lead Sunderland to League One glory next season.

He told FFC:

“At that level, he stands out. But what Sunderland must do is not draw as many games.

“I think it was 16 or 17 games last season. If you lose half of them and win half of them, you go up as champions, easily.”
