Tuskers, Eagles to clash in final

A round-up of the Pro50 Championship matches played on March 17, 2015

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Mar-2015Mid West Rhinos survived a middle-order stumble to beat Mountaineers by three wickets, denying the latter a spot in the final of the Pro50 Championship. Mountaineers, who were two points adrift of Mashonaland Eagles, needed a win over Rhinos and a Matabeleland Tuskers’ victory over Eagles to climb into second and a place in the final, but a loss ended their run. Tuskers and Eagles will now clash in the Pro50 final despite the latter’s 74-run loss on Tuesday.Rhinos had Mountaineers under pressure right from the start of the game as their pacers Michael Chinouya and Tendai Chisoro reduced Mountaineers to 83 for 7. From 102 for 8, Mountaineers managed to post 211 only through the 109-run partnership between Innocent Kaia and No. 10 batsman Tapiwa Mufudza. Kaia took on the scoring responsibilities, and brought up his maiden List A hundred, finishing with 101 off 144 deliveries with 12 fours and a six.The foundation for Rhinos’ 212-run chase was set up by the top order, with knocks from Bradley Wadlan (50) and Prince Masvaure leading the way. Three quick strikes by legspinner Natsai M’shangwe saw them stumble from 147 for 2 to 189 for 6 but Masvaure’s unbeaten 68 held the innings together and they achieved the target in the 36th over.Brian Chari’s 125-ball 115 and three wickets each from Brian Vitori and John Nyumbu were the stand-out performances in Tuskers’ 74-run win against Eagles.Chari’s 115, his maiden List A hundred, helped Tuskers post an imposing 279 for 5. Chari’s 137-run second-wicket stand with Nkosana Mpofu (50) set the base for Tuskers’ innings and they were given a boost by Luke Jongwe’s unbeaten 20-ball 37. In reply, Eagles kept losing wickets at regular intervals and had lost half their side by the 32nd over for 132 runs. Nyumbu and Vitori then ran through the rest of the line-up as Eagles’ innings folded for 205 in 43 overs.

'Kenya visit will change perception' – PCB

The PCB hopes Kenya’s visit to Pakistan can serve as a step towards the resumption of international cricket in the country

Umar Farooq12-Dec-2014The PCB hopes Kenya’s visit to Pakistan can serve as a step towards the resumption of international cricket in the country. Pakistan hasn’t hosted a Test, ODI or T20 international since March 2009, when terrorists attacked Sri Lanka’s team bus in Lahore.Kenya landed in Pakistan on December 10 with Steve Tikolo, their greatest player, now serving as their head coach. Kenya reached the World Cup semi-finals in 2003, but have fallen sharply since, to the extent that they lost their ODI status in January. They are bringing over a depleted side to Pakistan, without players such as Collins Obuya, Tanmay Mishra, Seren Waters and Irfan Karim. There is a general feeling that Pakistan could have invited Afghanistan instead, with the prospect of more competitive cricket than a series against Kenya. For the PCB, though, the move to invite Kenya was as much about ‘perception’ as it was about competition.Afghanistan have toured Pakistan recently, playing a short one-day series in 2011 and a T20 game against Pakistan A last month. Afghanistan’s players have close ties to Pakistan, many of them having been born and raised in refugee camps in the outskirts of Peshawar. A couple of them even had their weddings in Peshawar.Inviting a non-Asian team, in that context, is seen as making a little more of an impact on the international community’s perception of Pakistan’s ability and suitability to host international cricket.”It would be unfair in the extreme to assume that due attention is not being given to Afghanistan,” Subhan Ahmed, the PCB’s chief operating officer, told ESPNcricinfo. “We have signed and are implementing an elaborate MoU with the Afghanistan Cricket Board which facilitates and supports Afghan cricket in every which way.”But Kenya’s visit has its own importance because it is the first full non-Asian team to visit Pakistan after March 2009. This tour will help in changing the perception about security in Pakistan. We hope that tours by other full-member teams will follow after this.”Kenya’s players and staff are ensconced within three tight security layers. Movement has been restricted between the Gaddafi Stadium and the National Cricket Academy with the entire area cordoned off from the general public, who have to take an alternate route to get to the venue.”The purpose is to demonstrate that we have the will and resources to organize cricket befittingly,” Subhan said. “It is to give the visitors the comfort of a secure environment. As we move forward, there will be relaxation at various levels in the security but it will be gradual and not immediate.”That said, the perception that the Kenyans have been cooped up in a secure environment and just brought out for cricket over nearly two weeks is erroneous. On every free day, social activity and entertainment opportunities have been organised for the Kenyan squad. For instance, one day there is lunch at the governor’s house, then there is a visit to an elite college, shopping, dinner in the old city and also a bonfire. I am positive that apart from good cricket, the Kenyans will take back home happy and fond memories of Lahore and our hospitality.”Till June this year, Pakistan had been pushing hard to invite the full members but toned down their expectations thereafter. The PCB began lobbying among the affiliate and associate countries instead. Ireland could have been the first team to visit Pakistan but an attack on the Karachi airport postponed their visit.Pakistan are presently in talks with a few cricket boards in Europe, with Netherlands among them. ESPNcricinfo understands the Dutch high commissioner is among the high-profile guests invited to the Gaddafi Stadium to witness the Kenya series.”The revival of international cricket will be a slow process. Kenya’s visit will definitely give other teams the confidence of sending their outfits here and fortify our claims of there being a sea change in the security situation,” Subhan said. “Also, we are already in contact with a few other countries in this regard and we are expecting a positive outcome.”

Rossouw and Bavuma crush Australia A spirits

Unbeaten centuries from Rilee Rossouw and Temba Bavuma put South Africa A in a powerful position after two days of their four-day match against Australia A in Townsville

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Aug-2014
ScorecardUnbeaten centuries from Rilee Rossouw and Temba Bavuma put South Africa A in a powerful position after two days of their four-day match against Australia A in Townsville. The pair combined for a partnership that had reached 283 at stumps, all the more remarkable given they had come together with things looking shaky on 4 for 59.Rossouw finished the day on 162 from 228 deliveries and Bavuma was on 125 from 231 balls, the pair frustrating the Australia A bowlers after their encouraging start. For Rossouw, it was the continuation of a strong tour after his last four innings in the quadrangular one-day series in Darwin provided scores of 137, 38, 74 and 69, and helped him earn an ODI call-up for the tour of Zimbabwe. It was his 18th first-class century and his second in three matches against Australia A, after he posted an unbeaten 115 against them in Rustenburg last year. Bavuma’s hundred was his eighth in first-class cricket and he and Rossouw ensured South Africa A were able to progress to 4 for 342 at the close of play. The day had started less well for the visitors, who began at 1 for 26 and soon lost Hardus Viljoen (5) and Reeza Hendricks (18) to the bowling of Gurinder Sandhu. The Australia A captain Moises Henriques had his opposite number Justin Ontong caught behind for 6 and the hosts appeared to be on top, but Rossouw and Bavuma had other ideas.

Tavare and Gidman secure draw

Unbeaten centuries from Alex Gidman and William Tavare guided Gloucestershire to a draw with Essex in Bristol

Press Association30-Apr-2014
ScorecardWill Tavaré continued his impressive early-season form•Getty ImagesUnbeaten centuries from Alex Gidman and Will Tavare guided Gloucestershire to a draw with Essex in Bristol. The visitors took control of the Division Two clash on Tuesday after two days blighted by bad weather. Essex reached 305 for 8, with Ben Foakes unbeaten on 132, and their first act on the final morning was to declare. That left Gloucestershire, who made just 134 in their first innings, 171 adrift and facing a testing day in order to secure a draw. And it looked like defeat could well be on the cards when both openers went early but Gidman and Tavare guided them to 251 for 2 and a draw was agreed upon.Gloucestershire lost their first wicket in the third over when Chris Dent, who was last man out in the first innings, edged behind, giving David Masters his seventh wicket of the match.Captain Michael Klinger then fell for 7, bowled by Tymal Mills to leave the hosts wobbling at 18 for 2.But there was nothing Essex could do to part Tavare and Gidman, who batted together for more than 70 overs, putting on 233 runs. It was the second 200-plus partnership of the match, with Foakes and James Foster putting Essex in control with 218 on the third day.For 24-year-old Tavare, who was on exactly 100 when a draw was declared, it was a second century in three matches this season. Gidman scored at a faster rate to reach 119, his 21st first-class century.Essex collected 11 points from the match with Gloucestershire picking up seven. Both sides have drawn two of their three matches so far this season, with Essex beating Derbyshire in their opener and Gloucestershire losing to Hampshire.

England have named the uncapped pair of Beth Langston and Kate Cross in their 14-player squad to tour West Indies. The players were picked from a 21-strong England Women’s Performance Squad for 2013-14.The tour to West Indies will feature a T20 tri-series with New Zealand followed by three ODIs against the hosts. First-choice players Katherine Brunt, Anya Shrubsole, Laura Marsh and Heather Knight have been omitted in order to recover from injuries sustained during the Ashes, which England won 12-4 on the points-based system. Arran Brindle was not included for personal reasons. The return series in Australia will take place in January and February, with a 15-player squad to be selected after the West Indies trip.”After an inspirational summer regaining the Women’s Ashes, the England team now embarks on a full winter schedule starting with a tour to the West Indies,” Clare Connor, the head of England women’s cricket, said. “With a few experienced players currently rehabilitating injuries sustained during the Ashes campaign, a number of young players will have the opportunity to play key roles for the side in what promises to be an exciting tour against the hosts West Indies and also New Zealand.”Kate Cross and Beth Langston should both be congratulated on their selection after delivering consistently strong performances at England Women’s Academy level. Strength in depth is going to be critical to England’s success over the next couple of years with more and more international cricket on the horizon, including the return Ashes to Australia in January 2014 and the ICC World Twenty20 in March/April 2014.”England Women’s Performance Squad 2013-14: Tammy Beaumont, Arran Brindle, Katherine Brunt, Holly Colvin, Katie Cross, Charlotte Edwards, Georgia Elwiss, Natasha Farrant, Lydia Greenway, Jenny Gunn, Danielle Hazell, Amy Jones, Heather Knight, Beth Langston, Laura Marsh, Natalie Sciver, Anya Shrubsole, Sarah Taylor, Fran Wilson, Lauren Winfield, Danielle WyattEngland squad to tour West Indies: Charlotte Edwards (capt), Tammy Beaumont, Holly Colvin, Katie Cross, Natasha Farrant, Lydia Greenway, Jenny Gunn, Danielle Hazell, Amy Jones, Beth Langston, Natalie Sciver, Sarah Taylor, Lauren Winfield, Danielle Wyatt

Struggling teams look to leave the bottom third

Match facts

May 1, 2013
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)Jacques Kallis hasn’t been fluent with the bat this season•BCCI

Big Picture

Teams usually go into the IPL targeting one win more than half the matches they play, and then take it from there. Nine has been the magic number all captains have been talking about. Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils have played nine games each, and are six and seven wins away from that magic number. The phrase captains quote most is about doing things right and letting results take care of themselves. Knight Riders and Daredevils haven’t quite been able to do that so far. Knight Riders have relied on spin, but their local batsmen have let them down. Daredevils have the big names in both the batting and bowling department, but they haven’t fired as much as they would have liked. They don’t have much time left, and need to start winning consistently to keep the league interesting. The halfway point is way too early for teams to be ruled out of the playoff stakes.

Form guide

Delhi Daredevils WLWLL (most recent first)
Kolkata Knight Riders LWLLL

In the spotlight

What has Twenty20 reduced Jacques Kallis to? In the last match, bogged down by his tournament strike rate of 106, with others failing to make up around him, he premeditated a ramp, and ended up playing from well wide of off with eyes nearly closed to get dismissed. He looks stylish when he bats, he is a classy batsman without doubt, but he shouldn’t have to resort to such ugly shots.Mahela Jayawardene, David Warner and Morne Morkel usually take the three overseas slots for Daredevils, but they haven’t been able to sort out their fourth foreign player. They have tried Andre Russell, Johan Botha, Jeevan Mendis, Ben Rohrer and Roelof van der Merwe without any success. Will they go a step ahead and play with eight Indian players?

Stats and Trivia

  • Gautam Gambhir is the second highest run-getter in all IPLs, behind Suresh Raina, but he has hit the most fours: 280.
  • In nine matches, Daredevils’ wicketkeepers put together have registered four dismissals, the worst per-match rate in the league.
